I became the owner of a 164 QV this week, i have had heaps of auto 164s but this is my first manual, smooth as engine, fantastic gearbox, alot faster than i imagined, almost as fast as our previous 164 24 valve in sport mode!

When i recieved her she would occasionally (usually on startup) shoot up to 2000rpm on idle sometimes 2500 linger there for anywhere between 30 seconds to a minute or so and then drop down, now startup, warm and hot she just stays there and will not come down, i have never had this sort of problem with my autos, they were always baby bottom smooth!

Any owners have some ideas to save me diagnostic time??? Is this a common fault to the manual 164???

So far i have replaced the IDLE ACTUATOR, AIR FILTER and FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR but none of these items have made a difference, she just keeps on idling around 2000rpm, could the MOTRONIC ECU have a idle fault?

First welcome to the world of Qs and many years of enjoyable motoring in the future. Sorry, in 19 years of ownership and 180,000 km mine has never done that. Maranello Pur Sang have always done a great job with mine.

As suggested above check for vacuum leaks.  There are some little lines running off the plenum that are fairly rigid and over time become brittle and it's not immediately obvious unless you flex them a bit to see where there may be a crack - particularly around the ends of the hoses.

And welcome to the Q club - great cars aren't they?  Post some more pics if you have time - the 164 is one of my alltime fav Alfa designs.

That's 3 of us with black ones. David Wright told me about 15 years ago only 13 were brought in.

Interesting - didn't realise the numbers were so low.  There is another guy from Melb with a black 164Q on the Ausalfa forum too.  I wish mine was white actually, black is beautiful when clean but such a PITA to keep it that way!

agree about the PITA bit, try living in Werribee South with a black car  :(  David told me only 40 odd Qs came here, the majority being red.

If it's the intake rubber accordion - it's different to a normal 164. Alfissimo in the US is you're friend :)
I love my 164Q, just hate that someone in it's history colour coded the bottom half of it...
I really need to get mine onto a dyno - someone has messed with the AFM spring in the past.  :(
