I would like some help if possible. Iam wanting to know what upgrades I could perform on the car without it costing me the earth and also not taking away from the distinctive beauty of the alfa. its a 2001 alfa 2.0 147. any hints or guidance would be much appreciated.

Depends on how tired the engine is. Maybe start simply with a proper service and tune up by an Alfa specialist. You might be surprised how many horses that have run away over the last 20 years can be rounded back up...

Then maybe look at a better exhaust.
