Title: Early Sud gearbox possibly needed
Post by: Davidm1600 on October 26, 2012, 12:26:25 PM
Hi all Sud fans,

A mate of ours down here in Hobart, has an 80's model Sud 2 door sedan which has been significantly modified for Targa and club level events.  The latest modification he is having built up is a close ratio, straight cut gearbox.  However, he has hit what appears to be a snag.  That is, reverse gear won't work and jams the gears.  He has been advised by the guys in the UK who built him the box, that an early Sud reverse gear is required.  So if correct, does anyone either have such a thing or might know of where to find one.  PM me if you wish.  Thanks

Interesting about the close ratio straight cut gears, must need ear muffs to drive the car!, know who made the straight cut gears in the UK?, for the early reverse gear, try an old school Alfa Wrecker Suds, 33's Alfetta's etc, they usually have a pile of gears in a box, from wrecked gearboxes, try Monza Motors in Bayswater, Vic, or Milano Wreckers in Thomastown, Vic, Colin.

Thanks Col, yes i suspect it will be interesting to drive.  The noise something else.  Given that it is only used for competition, helmets are worn and being mostly for Targa with intercom, so perhaps it mightn't be too much of an issue ??

I don't know who was used over in the UK, but I could find out.  Autocraft (rally/race specialists) down here are sorting it all out and fitting it up.  Makes sense re your suggestion re where to find.  I had also made a similar suggestion and that can be followed up.  I just thought perhaps should try here to see if anyone had such a box sitting around and/or whether the supposed solution makes sense.  David

What is an early Sud?, early 5 speed or original 4 speed, the early 4 speeds were unwanted, but were stripped for Synchros and Hubs selector forks etc, Colin.

Hi guys, and thanks for the offer Meizhak, I will let my friend know in case.  Re Col's question, indeed a very good question, I think, and I only say this as that is what I understood him to say, that yes a box from an early sud means a 4 speed, rather than say a Ti 5 speed.  I will catchup with him soon and can find more, as well as seeing how is he is going with the build.
