Title: What is this ??
Post by: MD on October 20, 2012, 06:24:05 PM
Found this mystery traveler in the sump of one of my twin spark engines.

For the life of me I cannot identify it as any part belonging to the engine. It is approximately 15mm long and about 6 mm thick.

Anyone know what this sucker is ?

It's not a crank oilway plug is it ?   They get a groove along the back like that sometimes when staked in.  6-7mm dia I think.   Aluminium?

Aiken beat me too it. That's what I was thinking it may be with one end having been staked. What's the metal?

Spot on guys. It's an oil gallery plug in the crankshaft.

I didn't suspect that because the second engine has crankshaft with allen key plugs in it and at the stage of posting I didn't check the other cranshaft as I felt it was simply a foreign object that fell into the sump.

Cheers.
