Title: Gearbox help
Post by: lfetta on May 20, 2012, 05:37:51 PM
Hi has anyone fitted a 75 3l gearbox into a 83 alfetta sedan?
Or know if it is possible to do so?

Thanks
Nick

No dispute with the yes, yes but its worth noting that while it is indeed very possible there are the "usual issues" to deal with when doing this.

1. Output flange bolt sizes
2. Speedo drive
3. Gearbox linkage

Probably missed something...

Oh - and the diff is taller ratio (and the gears aren't any lower to compensate) so might not be ideal choice.

edit: simultaneous post re items 2,3...

Wow that's alot more involved then I thought : (

Thanks for the help!

Is there an easier option to have LSD? Is there lsd diffs you can get for the original box?

Thanks again
Nick

There was a factory LSD option for them but it was pretty much a factory race car build option only.   That is, existed in the parts manual only .....

But you can fit an LSD centre to them. Can be from a 105 or 75.  Needs some work to install, and is a specialist job but a reasonable option. I've had two done in the past. Give Vin Sharp at PACE a call.

The slightly easier swap is a TS transaxle in that the output flanges match and the ratios are right. You can either do the speedo drive and selector swap by opening up the box, or do what you need to to make the selector mechanism fit and work externally. Adapt the speedo via either some electronic box of tricks or fitting a different speedo "guts" behind the instrument panel.

Swapping diffs is more work..

But - it depends if you genuinely have a good transaxle to start with. If you need to rebuild or at least freshen it up it isn't a big deal to do the extra work to the 75 transaxle to fit it to an alfetta.

folks - is yet another option getting an LSD from a 75 auto???

I picked one up from Pick a part for $75 bucks .
I was told the LSD can be removed from the 75 Auto diff and droped into the Alfetta box.
I pulled apart the 75 diff before I bought it and it definetky was an LSD, but havn't got around to doing anything with it yet.

I'm aming to drop it into one of my alfetta's one day

Yep - you get the right stub axles as well.  Still needs setting up properly but the parts are all there.
