Title: Spider SmartTop
Post by: fab5freddy on April 17, 2012, 11:08:00 AM
Hi,
I was wondering if anyone here has installed the SmartTop for the Spider roof. If so, did you do the installation yourself, and would you recommend it?

Hi,
I found a couple of forum threads you might want to look at.

I bought one and installed it myself. I recommend it.
It's purely for mug lair poser value though, but then you've got a Spider...
There's a couple of problems though. You have to be real careful not to bump the flaps and the little motors that work the flaps on the top cover as they break easily and are real expensive. If you are a skinny guy, it's ok. If you are a big muscley guy, it might be easier to get a teenager to do it. I did it ok, but was packing death the whole time. Some of the electrical connections are very tight and awkward. The controller is about the size of a match box smaller than in the add. Amazing. Follow the instructions very carefully.
Also you need to get a dealer to reset the code to allow the windows to wind up remotely. This has been set to off so you can't accidently squeeze kids fingers in the windows, when you lock them in the car! True story. It's a bummer to have remote soft top with manual windows, cos you lock up and pop the top up as you walk away looking cool, then have to go back and wind up the windows. Interestingly when you come back and lower the top as you walk up the windows wind down fine. (No safety issue.)
