Title: Removing Dog Teeth Ring from a gear
Post by: Sam on February 02, 2012, 12:56:31 AM
Hi folks,

I have some left over gears from a gearbox that exploded some time ago I also own a lathe so as an experiment, I thought I'd see how hard it is to do a bit of gear lightening.

To do to this I need to remove the 'Dog Teeth Ring' (or whatever it's called) from the gear.
My understanding is that it's just pressed on, but I can't seem to get it off.

The 'Dog Teeth Ring' is smaller than the gear so I can't get a hold to remove it.

I was impatient, so I started on the other side (see attached pictures).
I didnt drill right through until I can remove the Dog Teeth and cut into the other side

Any ideas how on how to remove it?

Thanks in advance
Sam

On a Holinger proper race car gearbox, the dogs are pressed on with about .004 inch or ,1 mm press fit, that is the piece you are trying to remove is smaller than the gear, have a look on the spline where the dog is pressed on, and see if it has been projection welded, that is the spline melted to stop the dog coming off, if it has, get a little pencil grinder and grind the welds away, and see if you can get some thin bearing pullers under the dog to press it off, Colin
