Title: benifits of lsd at winton
Post by: dehne on June 28, 2011, 09:58:20 PM
hi all
just wondering would there be big gains with lsd at winton? the car is currently not bogging down or breaking into wheel spin have a lsd to put in but have been talking to others and now a bit lost.
any ideas
thanks

yes i have been on the track heaps, but no offical sprinting/racing more testing and im going for my first sprint and just want yto knoiw the benifits and if it really warrants doing it at winton

will it upset anything as in turnin or the like or is it just something i will need to adapt to

ok i understand that so there is no real negative

Quoteso there is no real negative

Only that it going to cost you ($$$$) something.

Dehne, what possible negative could there be in having a LSD. Not trying to be a smart arse but your usually a pretty knowlegable bloke,  these questions don't sound like they are coming from you . Just check and make sure no one has stolen your log in password.

I just goggled disadvantages of a LSD and this is all i could come up with

Traction
A disadvantage with a limited-slip differential is when you try to get started on an icy road from a stopped position. Usually with a limited-slip you have one wheel that is exerting most of the power. If this wheel looses traction on the ice then your car will slip and fish-tail

well the lsd is now in, i use to get wheel spin out of the corners and when i put the rear wing on and some better tyres it stoped happening, so my thoughts were did i relly need it, i was going to do my forst sprint with out it so when i did put it in i would have a comparasin, but as i had a couple of hrs spare to day i just put it in, and brake lines as well. i suppose the only real thing is that i will need to get used to having drive from both wheels but should not take long

Does that wing weigh about 300kg?  'Cos there's no other way a wing would stop wheelspin at Winton.

Did someone tell you this?  I'm no expert, but I would have thought the only way to upset turn-in with a diff is if it was fully locked, ie welded.  Fully.

i think with the wing because it flatten the car out not as much body roll (why this happens i dont know) and yes some one suggested that the lsd may hamper the turn in, i did not see how is could happen but you never know,
thanks to all for your help to.

Not sure about that . I would have thought ,Winton where most of the corners are reasonably low speed aero dynamics would hardly make any noticable difference.

Just my 2 cents worth

So, hey, I'm going to back you up a bit here dehne. Yes, an LSD can indeed contribute to understeer simply because by applying resistance to speed differentials between the two tyres on that axle you're forcing it to keep tracking in a constant direction.

Due to the design of the ZF LSD's used in Alfa's this is only really an issue with power on as they need torque and speed differential between the wheels to work.  So not on turn in but mid- corner once you start applying power and reduce front end grip as weight transfers rearwards.   And even then a standard LSD has pretty limited lock and in my experience you'll only notice it once you start adding friction plates and when they're new and working well.

Funny I googled 'benefits of LSD' and I got some interesting answers.  Better living through chemistry.  Not much about v8 supercar wings attached to Alfa 90s although I think some LSD might make that seem sensible.

Don't any of you remember the post about the wing on the 90 (edit: Chode, obviously you do) - I really was rotfl. It is a relief to know that that you put better tyres on at the same time Dehne. If you put some cheap Chinese rubbish (back?) on with the LSD you will very quickly realise what an improvement decent tyres are (I'm currently driving a TS that PO put some amazing(ly bad) rubber on the rear of - truly spectacular drift car now - and thats just on the way to the corner shop....).

just the diff itself, my idea of the WING was that it helped to flatten the car out and therefore i had more downward force on the rear and it help with the wheel spin, but hey i could have been wrong, it has happened before. and i promise this will be the last time i say WING it will now be known as a rear aerodynamic assistant package hehehe

the one that was in it, its the 85 mdl box, the centre fitted in perfectly and with no probs at all, once i put it back together i tested it and all works well
