Title: Alfetta wheels on a Sprint
Post by: Fetta GTV on May 12, 2011, 08:46:52 AM
I put the wheels off my Alfetta on the Sprint to check fit.
The wheels are 15x7' with 225 tyres on the rear and 195 on the front
I think a 6.5' would work better
Anyone got some 15' wheels they dont want?

Cheers
DAvid

Hi David

I suspect that's the 225 in the first photo? Would you know what the offset on that rim is by any chance?

I'm looking at getting wheels for my sprint too- would be nice to fill the guards by coming out a fair bit!

Thx

Martin

Hi Martin
Not sure of the offset of hand, I will measure it up for you tonight

Cheers

Thanks David,
Have you fitted tyres yet to the new rims?

I don't have any factory alfetta alloys left or anything suitable to measure myself.

I noticed franks green machine was running fat wheels with nice offset (recent 6 hour winton pics)- what are they frank if you are reading this?

I have 1 tyre on the new rims just to test fit, it is a 195/50/15
I'll get you a pic of that when I get you the offset measure.
I have also picked up a set of Bathurst globe style in 14x6 with 195/60/14 tyres
I dont have these at home yet to test fit, but when I do I'll put up some pics

The Simmons 15 x 7 measure 80mm from the mounting surface to the edge of the outer lip and 140 from the mounting surface to the edge of the inner lip.
The Starcorp rims 15 x 6 1/2 measure 70mm from the mounting surface to the edge of the outer lip and 130 from the mounting surface to the edge of the inner lip.
Some pics of the Starcorps with tyres below

Thanks very, very much, David.

The starcorps seem to have a good offset judging from the photos. The simmons sound more like 7.5-8" wide even after allowing for the extra width when measuring backspace to the outside of the rim. I guess neither have an ET stamp so it's always tricky to measure and compare.

Thanks again mate

Had another look at the Starcorp's they did have the ET stamped on them its 40
The Simmons dont have it, I guess because they are 3 piece and where custom made to suit the GTV
Let me know if you need any more info

The rims on the green machine are C.S.A  13 x 6JJ with 19P offset. The tyres are yoko Ao48  205 60 13. The lip/edge of all guards have to be removed. The rims are fitted without spacers.

David, the Simmons look awesome on the Sprint.

Latest set finally tested for size
These fill the guards nicely, but I will need to change to studs to fit them properly
What set of wheels do you all prefer, I cannot decide.

Those last ones look really good, and 14" would be good for the track, assuming 195/60s fit well in the wheel arches.

Bathurst Globes , without a doubt. Gives the Alfa a bit of that Aussie muscle historic tourer mongrel  look about it.

A bit like a good looking bird taking a kelpie for a walk.

Simmons V4 wheels for show. Bathurst Globes for go ( sprinting)

Going to Philip Island Dave ??

Nice description Paul
The Mongrel look works I think
What are the dates for Phillip Island, dont think I will have the Sprint ready but the alfetta could do with a run

They just fit, would need to get the lip on the guards rolled, they sit just inside the guard

Yep, I agree with Gully.

My brother Joe is also fitting a White set to his race car, looks grouse!

Globes it is then, I had better give them a refurbish
have just replaced strut and steering rack boots, car should be back on the ground soon
Frank, are your globes hubcentric or do they locate on the studs with those non tapered type nuts?
Title: Re: Alfetta wheels on a Sprint
Post by: 116gtv on December 08, 2011, 10:53:38 AM
I suspect most have too big a diameter hub center, and require shoulder nuts - a big pita if u need to change frequently.  ;) at least u could get centering rings, or maybe taper the holes if there's enough meat?

Where r u getting your studs from? I need to order some long ones and  maybe I'll get open ended nuts at the same time to allow for different wheel options..
Title: Re: Alfetta wheels on a Sprint
Post by: Frank Musco on December 08, 2011, 09:30:15 PM
My rims do not locate on the hub, they use the original bolts to centralise. So basically in reality my rims are hardly ever centralised. Bolts do not centralise the rim on the hub. I keep a piece of chalk and spin the rim marking the tyre to show me the eccentric. Then I loosen the bolts and tap the wheel to 'attempt' to centralise. It's a prick, and it really gives me the shits when I hit the track and before you know, my eyeballs are ready to drop out of my head! I love original parts, they just simply fit.
I also use two bolts with no head to screw into the hub to help me put the rim on and off.

Old engineering proverb that i just made up, spigots locate, bolts clamp, stray from this and you are on your own, Colin.

The Starcorp rims have a machined ring in them to locate.
I tapped them out and they fit in the globes and seem to locate them nicely.
The globes came with shoulder bolts but this would mean converting to studs.
It all gets messy when you stray from the original setup

Not sure at the moment still, I just got a set of new bolts for the Starcorps and was hoping that the globes would be able to use bolts, Let me know where you get your.

When i use to sprint my 33, i had steel rims from an Alfa, and the spigot on the hub would locate the rim perfectly in the centre, and the bolts would do up good and the rims would still come loose due to flex in the steel rim, sold them to a Fiat owner and purchased some good telephone dial Speedlines, never had the problem again, unless i forgot to tighten the bolts, which happened now and then, steel rims are used mostly at wrecking yards to prop up old cars, which they are quite good at, also they can be used to roll up garden hoses, but sprinting on them?, flat out down the straight at Calder, and jump on the brakes and you get a massive wobble, no thanks, i will stick with good old Alfa Speedlines, Colin.

Ask Frank Musco he would crack a steel rim nearly every sprint meeting.

Good to see steel wheels getting harder to get now, last Alfa Romeo to have steel wheels was 28 years ago, the single carb 33, about 20 years ago the Alfa club was considering banning steel wheels from sprint meetings due to safety issues, but alloys are ridiculously cheap second hand now, Colin.

Plenty of steel wheels and plastic hubcaps on current model Alfa Romeos in Europe, Col.  Not quite so prestige (or expensive) over there.

The sprint is off for rego in the new year and will hopefully be on historic plates.
Hope to get it up to Auto Italia this year.

My son is getting close to licence age and I think he has the same problem as us. Loves Alfa's already.
What one should I let him drive?

Quotelast Alfa Romeo to have steel wheels was 28 years ago

The base model 156 also had steel wheels. Teenager round the corner from me still has them on his car (not a bad 1st car, though has reversed it into a pole and left a massive ding in the boot!).

The Sprint got its blue slip yesterday.
Just waiting for the paperwork to come from the club and it will be on Historic rego.
Looking forward to getting it up to Auto Italia in April.
And there is a race day at Wakefield on the 31st Jan, may drive up and have a look.

Title: Torque steer
Post by: Fetta GTV on June 09, 2016, 11:10:40 AM
Have been using the sprint every now and then and love it.
One thing I have noticed is that the torque steer is much more noticeable with the deeper dish wheels, when I put the standard wheels back on it is nowhere near as noticeable.

Would it help if I gave it a bit more toe-in with the simmons on?

Its such a fun car to drive and I really like it with the simmons and would like to tame the torque steer a bit.

Can I ask what is the offset on the Simmons and the wheel tyre sizes.
Title: Re: Alfetta wheels on a Sprint
Post by: Fetta GTV on June 11, 2016, 06:31:41 PM
Simmons are 15x7 I will check the offset, can't remember.
Tyres are 195/50/15
Title: Re: Alfetta wheels on a Sprint
Post by: amichie on June 12, 2016, 06:29:05 AM
That would be great.

I am thinking of going 15x6 or 14x6 Superlites and I think the max offset I can get is +26. But I'm not going to do it if it's just going to create Torque Steer.
