Title: GTV, What to do???
Post by: ALFA156DALE on April 22, 2011, 09:48:21 PM
Hi all,
Iam looking at purchasing another alfa (mid 80's GTV) in weeks/months to come. I plan on using it as just a weekend car for a start, then once i get the funds together i would like to set it up as a serious road/race car, but i don't know whether to go for a 2ltr twincam and just turbo it in years to come or otherwise a 2.5 or 3.0ltr V6. 2ltr's are cheaper, but dont have as much power, but they also weigh less too.
So i thought i cant be the first person to go through this, so what shall i do, I think the 2ltr is lookin pretty good and is the better choice of the two?

cheers Dale. more opinions the better

Hi Dale,

Probably best you decide what you really want from a GTV, if you purchase a 2 litre you can't just 'throw' a V6 in later on, have a look at this thread -

http://www.alfaclubvic.org.au/forum/index.php?topic=6385.0

I have owned a GTV6 for the past 6 years, 2 litres are great, i have owned one and still drive one on a regular occasion, it is lighter in the front end, no extreme difference from the V6 if it has a good steering rack (some feel heavier than others for whatever reason) and its probably a bit better on fuel but whenever i am driving it i seem to miss that V6 power and sound... mainly the sound.

But if you a grab 2 litre you have the option of putting a Twinspark engine and gearbox from a 75 in. Then you will have a great track car and an awesome road car!

it may be a silly question but what would it take much to put a later twin spark engine out of a 147 and 156 in a 2ltr GTV (or are they the same engines as a twinspark in a 75?) would i get that many more killerwasps and talks :) and what about a turbo too? (alot work :) but i would like to be able to beat one of my mates in his maserati ghibli on a few rallies :)

Cheers Guys

no i havnt brought anything yet, i have had a look at the Turbodelta and it has a little bit of rust in it and would probably need a respray, i would like to keep the price under $5,000 for the base, then from there i expect $10-$15,000 and i would like to update the engine anyway with a later 2 ltr.

no i havnt brought anything yet...

What exactly are you bringing?

bring - verb (bringing, present participle; brings, 3rd person singular present; brought, past participle; brought, past tense)

1.Come to a place with (someone or something)
- she brought Luke home from the hospital
- Liz brought her a glass of water

2.Cause (someone or something) to come to a place
- what brings you here?
- a felony case brought before a jury
- his inner confidence has brought him through his ordeal

3.Make (someone or something) move in a particular direction or way
- he brought his hands out of his pockets
- heavy rain brought down part of the ceiling

4.Cause (something)
- the bad weather brought famine
- her letter brought forth a torrent of criticism

5.Cause (someone or something) to be in or change to a particular state or condition
- I'll give you some aspirin to bring down his temperature
- his approach brought him into conflict with government

6.Involve (someone) in a particular activity
- he has brought in a consultant

7.Initiate (legal action) against someone
- riot and conspiracy charges should be brought against them

8.Force oneself to do something unpleasant or distressing
- she could not bring herself to mention it

9.Cause someone to receive (an amount of money) as income or profit
- two important Chippendale lots brought $10,000 each
- five more novels brought him $150,000

Sorry mate, its a pet peeve of mine the way this word is being misused.

The GTV you're looking at certainly looks like a goer though. Price seems very reasonable, I've bought Alfetta's for around that price range in a lot worse nick. It seems like it wouldn't be too difficult to get it road ready too, if thats what you needed. Why are you looking at mid 80's?

i'm surprised the turbo delta hasn't sold dehne. if i didn't have my hands full with two projects, i would have seriously considered having a look at it.
