Title: Repairs to a 105 speedometer?
Post by: Evan Bottcher on February 01, 2011, 08:15:59 PM
Hi folks,

I don't think this speedo/odo was working when last I drove our GTV in 1999.  The trip meter reset doesn't work.  Should I just look for a good replacement, or are these things reasonable to get repaired?

Any recommendations on somewhere to look at it?

thanks,
Evan.

Hi Evan.

Stick an electric drill, in Reverse,in the back of it, using an old piece of inner cable.
That should tell you if it works or not.
Im sure you are going to replace your old n tired speedo + tacho cables,so using 2 inch end,,off the old inner cable,in a drill,in Reverse, should tell you lots.

I've used Ringwood Speedometer Service several times, including to install an electronic drive unit in my tacho to suit the T-spark. Very professional service.

Speedos can be repaired and or checked but make sure you get a very detailed and written quote before you approve any repairs.
I relied on a verbal discussion and ended up with a huge repair bill with no detail of what was actually done.

Thanks for the advice folks - I'll try the ol' electric-drill-and-end-of-cable trick tonight.  If it works I probably won't bother fixing the trip meter.

Maybe the trip meter cable needs to be pulled out or pushed in to make it work properly

Looks like it works.  The cheapy ebay battery I bought to fit my Bosch cordless drill died after a year, so I don't have much juice to make it spin quickly.  Odo turns over too.

Trip meter cable outer part is split, so I think I may just need another cable.

Evan

Just had the speedo & tacho in the 105 'serviced' by Ringwood Speedometer Service and highly recommend. Also fitted new cables with plenty of grease (thanks for the assistance & advice Damien!) and the speedo & tacho work like new. Have used Ringwood Speedometer Service previously and highly recommend. $200 for the service 6 months ago.

Place a cable into the back of your speedo and cable and manually turn softly and you will probably feel some resistance. Both instruments need cleaning & fresh grease every 40 years or so!

I would highly recommend getting it serviced and fitting a new cable at the same time. I think there is a seal at the bottom of the cable that prevents oil being drawn up the casing, and if it's not working properly the same problem will recur pretty quickly.

I can tell you that speedos are a problem with early 33's, so i know a lot of speedo repair places in Melbourne, i won't tell you the ones that are no good because i might end up in court, the last one i went to did a good job, it was Ringwood speedos on the Maroondah highway just near Eastlink, he even had new speedo needles for the 33 as the original ones bend in the strong Australian sun, how good is that, Colin.
