Title: Tips on removing trunnion arm at diff end?
Post by: Evan Bottcher on January 03, 2011, 03:17:23 PM
Can't seem to remove the trunnion arm at the diff end.  I've removed the castellated nut, and I expected everything to just slide off.  The next part on the big bolt just has two big flats, not a hex, and I can't really get a spanner onto it.  Is it threaded onto the big bolt on the diff?

Based on this thread on AlfaBB (http://www.alfabb.com/bb/forums/suspension-brakes-wheels-tires/169119-105-front-suspension-dismantling.html) it seems that the washer part should slide off with some persuasion.  I'll soak it in some WD40 and see how things go.

Yep - they should slide off - they get rubber detritus wedged between them and the shaft making them a pain to get off.  I polish the shaft and grease the sliding nut (maybe I should reword that... ;)  )    to try and keep it from jamming.  As you said - wd40 and use the flats to rotate it with a screwdriver levering it off will release it every time, except when it doesn't ;)

Thanks, that was really helpful.  Came off with a minimum of bludgeoning after a soak in wd40 and a bit of levering and twisting...
