Title: problems with start up
Post by: mario-jnr on August 14, 2010, 05:03:09 PM
hi all have been rebuilding a 1300 gt junior long story short paint done brakes done converted a 116 2ltr to adapt a 105 all good untill i just tried to start it got a mechanical noise on cranking looked under the car and saw a bunch of metal fillings, damm looks like the flywheel is grinding the bellhousing now when i built the engine i used a flywheel i got from the states it was from a late model fuel injection motor question are these flywheels larger slightly or is my gearbox bellhousing at fault thanks any opinions  ???

Did you use the 1300 starter motor on the 2 litre?  Some starters have 8 teeth, some have 9 (IIRC).  From memory, the 9 tooth version is more common, found on later 1750s (I think), and most 2 litres (including alfetta etc).  The starter should match the flywheel, otherwise it won't mesh correctly.  Given that you have to stick with the flywheel you've got, you'd need a 2 litre starter motor if this is where you've gone wrong.

Just to add (from recent personal experience) if it is a mismatched starter/flywheel.

J&H is correct and match flywheel to starter, also in regards to the 9 teeth starter motor, beware 2L are 9 teeth but as is 1.8L or 1750 are also 9 teeth, but 2L vs 1.8L/1750 are different pitch.

So despite 9 teeth, you will definitely want a 2L and don't go with 1.8L (which I think are 105 ones I think) or 1750 one.

I mistakenly installed a 2L s/m to a 1.8L flywheel and it did not work and broke the starter.

thanks for your quick responses i have 2 starter motors one that came out of the 116 2ltr and another i picked up from milano spares i carnt remember which one i am using in the car now.
so just to get things straight you all think its a mismatched starter to flywheel that would explain why it would tend to "lock" after cranking for 5 seconds it would feel and sound like it hit a block and then the starter would wind but not crank the engine but from memory both are 2ltr starters is the 116 starter not a match with the 105 ringgear :o

That I can't remember, whether there is a difference between 116 2 litre starter and 105 2 litre starter....  Easy way to check, pull the starter out and turn the motor over by hand.  If it keeps turning freely, its probablly a starter mismatch.  If it jams, something else is going on.

It seems very likely a mismatch.

Start motor specs listed below:

105 series 1964-74 and some GTV with 9 Tooth x 25mm Pinion

105 series 1964-74 series 2 1750 GTV. 8 Tooth x 27mm Pinion

105 series with 2ltr engine. 8 Tooth x 27mm Pinion

Alfetta 116 series 1972-86. 9 Tooth x 29mm Pinion

So you need to know what the flywheel was off and get the matched start motor.  Different pitch and tooth combinations.

ok today i pulled the motor out and as i origionaly thought the flywheel was grinding the bellhousing i compared it with a 105 2ltr flywheel and its larger in the ringgear by posibly 2mm.i compared the diameter of the 105 2ltr f/w the unused one to that on my 1300 and dimentions are identical so i will have to change it over now both 2ltr starters are 9 tooth one was supplied from a 105 and the other is from the donner car 116 sorry fot my ignorance but what is a pinion and how do i mesure it to make sure ive got the correct one thanks for all your help
