Title: Alfa GT - knocking noise in suspension
Post by: francoisl on June 14, 2010, 12:54:57 PM
Hi Guys,

I am new to this forum and to alfas in general...

I am currently looking at buying a 2005 GT with about 61,000 kms on the clock. The car seems in pretty good condition and has full service hostory. The only thing that worried me when I took it for a test drive yesterday is that there was a significant knocking sound when going over bumps. The current owner tells me that the car has always been like that but I can see this driving me crazy after a few days.

Should I be worried about this? I realise that it can probably be due to a number of factors but I'm I looking at $$$ for worse case scenario? I am going to get the car checked out but wanted to get a second opionion.

I would appreciate a quick response as I would like to close the deal ASAP.

Thanks and Regards,

Francois

Welcome and in regards to the knocking sound, I know what you mean.

I get a bit of knocking from the front suspension of my 147 GTA. it has been checked out by an Alfa specialist so I'm not worried about it from a safety perspective myself and next service I'll be raising it as something to look out for.

I suggest you get it checked by an Alfa specialist, but I don't think it will be a massive issue.

Other knowledgeable folk here may have other opinions, I'm interested in also.

Thanks for the response Brad.

Will do some digging around today to see if I can find out a little more about it. Still very interested to hear from anyone who might have experienced this problem and might be able to provide some advice.

I bet it's the antiroll bar bushes.. No big deal to replace. May want to post this in the correct forum so you get more opinions..

Presuming it's from the suspension, then as above, it can be the ARB drop link bushes. But also the wishbone bushes; the top wishbone ones seem to wear faster than others.

Not overly expensive to fix, and easy to do for any experienced mechanic. If you're serious about the car, then take it to an Alfa workshop for assessment. You could ask the owner where he has his car serviced, and go there. But otherwise, any of the good indies or Lance Dixon.
