Title: Brake squealing 2004 JTS 156
Post by: sly17 on April 10, 2010, 06:38:00 PM
Hi all

Just recently noticed that my brakes are beginning to squeal. Whenever I need to brake medium-hard it almost always lets out some sort of squeal.

Any ideas on how this can be fixed/minimised?

Thanks in advance,
Simon

Hi Simon, it could be something as basic as excess brake dust and it just needs a good clean. Easier said than done these days when your not allowed to go within ten feet of your car with garden hose and the guys at the car spa only care about what they can see or should I say what you can see. Next time you get it washed ask them to give wheels and especially the brakes a bit of blast with the pressure hose but be just mindful when you take off.

Check your brake pads - they could be worn out; if the brake pads are still ok, it is probably your brake discs - they're either completely worn or need to be machined as they wore out unevenly. I sign of them being completely worn is that when you hit the brakes a first few times when they are cold -they won't make any noise, but as they warm up they start squealing a lot

brakes are simple things... if your pads aren't worn out (there is a limit line) and the rotor is not at minimum thickness (20.2mm), the squealing can be merely glazed pads (sounds like it if it is only at medium or light applications) or the pads is rubbing in the caliper, in which case you will need to line the pad with copaslip or similar....

in any case, since quality oem pads are relatively cheap, could be an idea to go at it all round if the mileage or age suggests its time to check pads...

just make sure the rotors are still good...

Perhaps non standard brake pads have been fitted. It has been mentioned previouly on the forum that you can get better pads but they could be noisy.
Cheers.
