Title: 2002 147 Manual, 4th gear fail!!! Help!
Post by: Ant147 on April 09, 2010, 11:06:45 AM
Hey all, new Alfa owner here. Just bought a 147 Manual, within four months 4th gear has stopped working! The transmission mechs are saying $ 4000 for a repair. Was hoping anyone could offer an alternative. possibly a used/reconditioned gearbox. Any help most welcome. ;D
I love my Alfa but we're not speaking at the moment!!!!

Sorry to hear about your issue.
I do not know what state you live in but the some of each state club sponsors are Alfa Specialists who can give you options on changover, rebuild etc and usually a bit cheaper than the official dealer network. These people are pasionate about the marque so you should get the right info.

I would like to knw how the 4th gear broke and if anything was picked up with a pre purchase inspection.
I do not know who you took  it to but you may need a second opinion.

For Vic refer sponsors link, top right side of the club site home page.  Monza Motors, Maranello or the Italian Job are a few that may assist. For other states, that's up to someone else.

Hey Ant, if you go to the home page for this forum and then go to the state divisions, you'll find a topic at the top of each board which should give you the link to the sponsors page of your state division. Please let us all know how you get on as I doubt any of us have heard of this problem in a manual gearbox before.

If you try the ALFA specialists (not gearbox gimps), they should be able to repair your gearbox cheaper than fitting a secondhand gearbox - assuming that the issue is simply you cannot actually select 4th gear, rather than something more severe.  Its a known problem involving improper cleaning of the housings in the box after machining (when they were being built in the factory), allowing pieces of swarf to jam the selector on fourth gear.

If you are in victoria, Monza motors are definitely aware of this issue, and I'm sure the others would be as well.
