Okay, the general question of the day...
equipment -
79 Alfetta GTV 2000. PACE headers, PACE cam and drilled out Dellorto 40's on carby extensions and with original airbox (but drilled out and filter removed when on the track). Original torsion bars, springs (quite soft if you push down on them from the outside) and after market shocks but lowered. Original seat but harness fitted (but not using crotch belt), Brembo GTV6 calipers and braided lines with decent but not great pads n fluid. Electronic ignition is also fitted and running on well used D01J's
result -
The car stops oikay and turns well with no apparent significant under or oversteer yet but you cant get past 6000rpm or 150kph (imagine Winton short for those not familiar with Wanneroo Raceway) and there is a persistent flat spot at 2800 - 3000 but with heavy revs, can break through that okay.
Question -
Assuming you are on a budget, what do you do first if at all?
- fit a race seat so you can use the full 6 point harness with crotch belt in order to be more 'one with the car'?
- replace the springs with stiffer version and perhaps new shocks?
- replace the carbys with Weber 45's?
- go back to trumpets n socks
Ed
Hey Ed , thats just what I've got and had the same dilemmas last year. First preference would be
Put a twin spark in it.
If the budget doesn't stretch to that at least get some decent cams (10548's). Early model GTV 6 springs & torsion bars and koni yellows will also help enormosly . I would also get a decent seat. Got to be worth a few seconds a lap anywhere. Trying to go fast in the standard old alfetta setup ( vinyl seat etc) is like sitting in a wok hanging on to a bus like steering wheel.
Gully
Springs first, and then get some decent pads and make sure the calipers are all in good nick, and fix the flat spot.
Good to see you back on the track Hustler, I may try to get to Perth sometime next year, will have to make it around a track day now! 166 looks beautiful BTW.
Cheers Sheldon, yes it is great to be back on track after a 2 year break. Love to see you over here sometime.
Paul, I want to logbook this car for Group S so no twin spark motor swap i am afraid and it's already got a combo PACE and 10548 cam set fitted.
But you reckon a set of GTV6 springs will assist? That's got to be an economical option. I've got a full set of new Gabriel shocks in the shed (but not their not Koni yellows). I think the current shocks are "Spage"? fitted cos the original owner used to tow!.
Any other suggestions, advice out there?
Lose some weight!
HaHa
lose any more weight and my pants will fall down! i only weigh 75kg
Ed
I suggest you shave your legs no full body wax . ;D
Seriously if you need GTV6 springs, torsion bars, anti roll bars I have a full set you can have.

Done, and i will even shave my legs just for you in return for taking these items off your hands!
If you are in no rush to shift em, i will make plans with you to collect them in the New Year in exchange for a bottle of red or a 6-pack of your choice, unless you want some cash?
Thanks for the offer.
Hi Ed
We will catch up in the New Year.
Not looking for anything for the parts, consider it a donation to the Fast Eddie "Hustler" racing team. ;D
John
Suweet,
my racing team has been called many things so why not add "hustler" to it.
Think i might just try to justify to myself a nice new pair of race seats i am coveting on ebay going cheap.
Then save up for a pair of 45's (cheapest ex UK it seems) and maybe experiment with a set of EBC greens that i first started with and quite liked unless anyone wants to make a reccomendaiton. I think i am running Ferodo's right now.
I'll need GTV6 ones as i am running brembo alu calipers.
Ed,
Grab those parts and in the new year and if you like I will give you a hand to fit them at my workshop.
Over a couple of "sherberts" on a weekend of course.
it just gets even better!
Okay, part 2 -
remembering this car is and will for the forseeable remain road registered (WA) and i am looking to buy and fit race seats, should i only be looking at ADR approved seats such as Autotechnica brand at around $300 each or do i ignore that if i can pick up 2 x brand new fibreglass fixed back seats for dirt cheap? on the presumption that i wont get pulled over?
The car only gets driven once a month on average and i always obey the speed limit on public roads.
Ideally i need to make a decision in under 24 hours from now.
Eddie,
My guess is that either seat will need certification that it is installed correctly and complies with ADR's otherwise the car may be technically unroadworthy and nullify any insurance claims. You may want to check out first. Speak to a private certifier in your locality.
On the race thing I agree with Sheldon, sort the donk out first. John's bars should help but you may need stiffer rear springs too and sway bars to match if you want to go that far..

Hey John,
sent you a pm last week. Let me know when and where to collect me bits and what is your preferred beer.
cheers
Ed
i am surprised that no one addressed the real problem preventing you to go quicker ... :P ;)
Hi Ed,
glad to hear you are back on track!
What I would do is:
1) Roll Cage - Safety First
2) Race Pads, RBF600 Motul Fluid and brace your master cylinder to stop flex.
3) Make the car as balanced as possible, set up front and rear suspension to work together i.e. get a package from someone who has a proven product. My 33 Runs Spax springs and revalved Konis and do not use the adjustment to stiffen the the rate they are not designed for that and it can cast a couple of seconds a lap, and 4mm out toe out (track only)
4) When on the track remember what a racer once told me "See God, then back off". I'm told that is when you going fast enough!
PM me if you need any Konis
Stay safe
Andrew
