Title: Safely remove hatch glass
Post by: kartone on July 12, 2009, 08:30:07 AM
Has anyone removed the rear hatch glass from a 80 GTV?
Any tips so as not be left with a hand full of glass shards; technique, procedure, special lubrificants, etc.
Many thanks.

Kartone

Question is whether the glass is broken already or in original condition that you want to keep? If it's the latter, I would simply approach a few automotive glaziers for advice.

Thank you both for the input.

The glass is not broken and the solastic has been cut & removed.
All I now need is courage & determination.

Quite Bazaar.

I was going to ask this questions myself this week as I am looking at repairing a rust patch just under the window rubber.

Happy to let you go first though :-)

The only time I have changed a windscreen was on an old cortina, which was attacked by geese. I drove it to the tip kicked the glass out, drove it home and put a new one in. I do remember vaseline around the rubber and a string was used to get it back in.

catch ya

Shane . I really enjoy your posts on motoring exploits, i don't think you will ever die wondering. Perhaps there could be a book in it after you finish your "Pubs" manuscript.

Cheers

when they ( auto glazier ) removed my old screen, he simply sat in the front seat placed his boots evenly apart on the screen and pushed. Even pressure and it popped out !

The screen wasn't to be saved and did crack, but it came out easily enough.

New screen went in just as easily - as per Shane's comment - a little Vaseline and a length or rope.. I dare say he had done this several time before....

Sorry but is this a gasketed or glued in windscreen? I've done both, and it's an easy job either way. My gasketed one wasn't glued in at all, so I just started from the top, pushing lightly and tucking the rubber under the flange. If it's glued in it's just a matter of cutting around and have the courage to start lifting.
The rear glass is tough, so don't worry too much. Front glass on the other hand, cracks at the mere sight of a screwdriver...

I just remembered how I did the gasketed one: I cut about 10-15 pieces of sheetmetal to aid in the tucking, each about 5cm wide. It's just a variation on the familiar "thousand screwdrivers" method, except I don't have all that many screwdrivers and the sheetmetal is gentler on the rubber and the glass.

Thanks Paul.

As Mr Garrison says "There are no stupid questions Eric, just stupid people:-) ". Hopefully when I do finish the pub book, stories about Alfa's could be a followup.

K76,

so ... from the inside, push the gasket lip over the metal perimeter until all on the outside, then push glass & gasket out of frame ?
