Title: Strange vibration / shuddering
Post by: dcioccar on August 25, 2025, 11:06:15 PM
Hi all,

A bit of a strange issue with the Alfa 159 (1750 TBi).

I was driving earlier this evening and just changing lanes when I heard a noise as if I had run over something. Immediately after, the steering started to vibrate, so I thought I must have a punctured tyre. I pulled over but the tyres were fine. I drove further and then suspected the wheel nuts, but they were also fine. It was no worse under braking, so that ruled out the brakes and rotors, but I did notice than when the clutch was depressed the vibrations went away, but they were also consistent with road speed rather than engine speed.

So now I'm thinking either an issue with the gearbox (clutch disc or flywheel) or one of the CV joints or driveshaft. I suppose the noise could have been a chunk of the clutch friction disc that I heard? I had noticed that in the days leading up 3rd gear had been difficult to engage when the car was cold, but this could be a coincidence. Any thoughts?

Cheers,
Dom.
