Hi MadAlfa, very sorry to hear about your sad incident. do you know when the timing belt was last changed, either in terms of kilometres or years? I would say find the cheapest option of getting your Alfa on the road again, it will then have a tangible value, whether you wish to part with it or keep it.
I have just bought a very nice Alfa Giulietta with only 20,000 km on the clock. However, it is a 2015 car, and I am sure that the timing belt has never been changed. My garage says, "it's fine", but I don't want to suffer your experience!

If the belt has never actually been changed and your mechanic is aware of this then you need to find another garage, seriously!
There is a reason why belt changes are given both mileage and age limitations, as belts don't just wear, they also age and dry out/become brittle over time, resulting in failure. The maximum listed time frame for timing belt change on a 2015 Giulietta is either 4 or 6 years depending on conditions. At best, your car is 3 years overdue.

Hi Baz, OMG I rather suspected that. We once had a terrific Alfa man in Cairns (John Mitchell) but he has moved down south. He always insisted that the belts be changed as per the book, my "new" replacement garage is just a general garage, and the guy did inspect the belt during a routine service, but I doubt he could see much of it. I need to find a more reliable garage! We no longer have an Alfa specialist locally. Thanks for the advice.
