Post by: Rex Pirie on February 01, 2009, 01:40:52 PM
Hi,
can anyone help me with the link or address for the register of engine numbers.
I've bought a 1750 engine that Bruno is going to rebuild and i wanted to confirm its history.

Hey thanks Shane and Mario,
that's the link I was looking for.
I'll send it off to them but Mario the number is AR00548*58717*
if you have a list handy.
Cheers

Hi Rex, had a look at my files and although there were lots of engine numbers starting with AR00548 *xxxx*  the 58717 was shown.
Shanes E-Mail may be the better option.
Regards, Mario

Rex,
I had a look in Fusi's book.
He lists 1750 engines fitted to Berlinas, Coupes and Spiders from 1970 with the number range 45485 to 138077, so I guess yours is from that year. Unfortunately, it is no more specific than that.
The 00548 engines were 1750 carby models - though I guess you already know that - with the later engines fitted with the hotter 10548 cams. If it's any help, my car (September 1970 1750GTV) still has the original motor which has an AR00548*F####* number. I think that the 'F' series motors were the very last of the carby 1750s and were equipped with rudimentary antipollution gear, eg: crankcase gas recirculation and Solexes, though oddly, my car has Webers.
I guess your motor lies somewhere between January and September 1970.
Let us know how you get on with the Alfa Archive.

Thanks Mario and Chris,
I emailed Alfa a week ago but haven't heard back yet !
The engine had Dellorto's attached, I'm going to use the Weber's off the 1600 so the Dellorto's are looking for a new home if anyone is interested.

I'm going to deliver the engine to Bruno at Maranello this week so he might have some info too.
Cheers

That's very unusual, they usually get back within the day, I've had responses within the hour.  I think they may have changed their email address for these types of query.  I tried in January and was given the following address, had a response within 10 minutes.

CentroDocumentazione@alfaromeo.com

I went through the Alfa website and sent an email and got an answer almost straight away. All they could tell me was that it was a 1750 from a Giulia.
So far so good ! Now i get it rebuilt !!
Cheers

I guess they don't track the engine numbers as closely as the chassis numbers except to note that a particular range of engine number corresponds to a model series.

Good luck with the rebuild and let us know how it all turns out.

Cheers Chris,
Any 2 litre cams out there? Bruno says they help the engine breathe better but they're a bit hard to find these days!

Occassionally they come up on eBay or you could try the Alfa wreckers.
I know that the Alfa parts dealers stock various higher profile cams, though they are expensive.

Out of interest I had a look on eBay - quite coincidentally there is a pair for sale in Adelaide.
They look OK.
