Title: Google Maps
Post by: Evan Bottcher on July 15, 2006, 02:17:48 PM
Google maps has been building up some great hi-res satellite photos of Australia.

Sandown Raceway:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=melbourne,+australia&ie=UTF8&ll=-37.950289,145.166302&spn=0.009678,0.024376&t=k&om=1

Phillip Island:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=phillip+island&ie=UTF8&ll=-38.502303,145.234473&spn=0.009605,0.024376&t=k&om=1

Eastern Creek:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=eastern+creek&ie=UTF8&ll=-33.805486,150.869944&spn=0.005099,0.012188&t=k&om=1

Use the controls on the left side of the map to zoom in - amazing detail at the highest level of zoom...

Unfortunately there's only low-res images for rural australia - so images of winton and bathurst etc are pretty poor:

How long till they can beam us LIVE satellite footage?  Then you can watch the v8 supercars from outer space?!

Here's the broadford motorcycle track that Barry was talking about for driver training courses:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=broadford,+australia&ie=UTF8&ll=-37.215702,145.082896&spn=0.009774,0.024376&t=k&om=1

You can see the dirt speedway track there as well.

Crikey I didn't answer this one - in case you're still interested...

Yep it uses the same map information as google earth I believe, but because google earth is not just a website it's a program you download to your computer it has a lot more features to play with.  if you take the latitude and longitude out of the links that I posted you should be able to enter them into google earth and get the same view...
