Hey guys
Recently purchased an 08 159 2.4 with the auto box. Recently today when I was parking, I shifted the vehicle into reverse and the car suddenly jolted, I shifted back to drive and the car jolted again. I am a bit worried about this as I have had to replace a selespeed before on a 156. I was completely stationary when I changed the gear from drive to reverse. Some help would be appreciated.

The transmission most likely needs re-calibrating. Also unless you have the paperwork to say otherwise I can guarantee the fluid hasn't ever been changed.
Take it to a trusted Auto Transmission Specialist and get him to change the fluid out and re-calibrate the Transmission.
UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES ALLOW HIM TO DO A "POWER FLUSH"! It will more than likely force all the crud built up in the unit to break free and clog the clutch solenoids, resulting in a new Solenoid Pack to be fitted or worse a new Transmission.

No, I am saying to have the Transmission fluid changed but NOT to have a "POWER Flush" done.

I remember reading quite a bit about these aisin boxes on alfaowner years back, there is a selection valve or something that can stick and after much neglect required repair, but the main problem was just old fluid. Baz sounds correct that flushing it at this age will do more harm than good. Apparently factory in these boxes to remain sealed for life and in hindsight should have new fluid every 70 or 80 thousand ks (? Can't even remember who determined that but I dare say your local Alfa shop would know best)
Also an interesting note was there's a specific technique to properly draining and refilling the box as quite a lot of fluid remains when simply drained via the plug.

If you have to fit one of these (above) often as people with a manual box and DMF need to do the clutch, lifetime costs are probably similar. :)
Anyone know what oil to use for the gearbox, and how much is needed?

Usually 12L or more is required depending on how the change/flush is carried out.

You can only physically remove a limited amount of the total volume - say it's one third. That's why you do multiple changes in succession; the oil is first 1/3 fresh then just over half fresh, then 70% fresh then 80% fresh after four changes.

Not meaning to to be disrespectful here, but I mean this in your best interest.
By the questions you are asking you knowledge of auto transmissions is insufficient to do the job properly. You also should reset the Automatic Transmission Computer and re-calibrate it, to do this you need the correct diagnostics to do the job.
So in my opinion you should NOT attempt to do the job yourself but get it done by a automatic transmission workshop or you are going to end up in expensive trouble.
