Title: Alfa Mito 1.4 TCT Smoking
Post by: joestram on March 24, 2018, 03:50:36 PM
Hi All,

I have just noticed smoke omitting from my bonnet randomly when stopped accompanied by a strong burning smell.

Water temp levels are fine and no errors are being reported on the dash.

I tried to look in the engine bay last night ans saw some oil.

It is on the right side of the engine above the gearbox.

Does anyone know where or what it might be from these pics?

Also, the hose along the firewall looks like it has burnt off. Is that normal?

Thanks in advance!

Joe

At the right side of engine there is a cylindrical device, this is the vacuum pump, there is a thin gasket between it and where it mounts onto the engine, this sometimes leaks. Check to see if it leaking underneath the vacuum pump at the gasket.

And as for the is it normal for the hose to burn off . . . NO!    :o

Which hose is it?

Thanks for the reply.

The hose does not look factory. It comes out of the firewall from the drivers side.

I can't seem to find the other side.

Regarding the oil, I have also noticed the bottom of the exhaust manifold, where it bends to go to the cat, it looks like there has been oil there as well.

Is the vacuum pump gasket something I can do (limited mechanical knowledge) or will it need a trip to the mechanic?

Thanks

Joe

If you have to ask, best take it to mechanic. It may not even be the Vacuum Pump Gasket, I am just making and informed, educated guess. Best to take it to someone who is experienced with Alfas, they will also be able to work out the deal with that mystery hose.

My guess is that the hose in the last photo is a windscreen drain hose and it appears to be blocked. Agree with Bazz, if you can not spot the oil leak, I would take it to a mechanic (at a guess I would say it could be a leaking tappet cover gasket).

Hi guys,
Thanks for the feedback.
Apparently it is the vacuum pump.
Do I need to do the whole pump or can the seals be done instead?
Thanks!!

Just replace the paper gasket between the pump and engine.

Thanks bazzbazz - I will get a mechanic to look into it.
Thanks
