Title: When replacing dampers, what else should be replaced on a 147?
Post by: Divano Veloce on January 25, 2018, 04:42:06 PM
I'm going to order some new dampers for the 147, what else should I replace while its apart? 122000kms and no squeaks or clunks.... cheers

The only physical items worth considering initially, are the rubber top mounts.

There is one spec only for the front, 60625002.

There are two specs for the rear, one is applied to the GTA, Blackline/Ti spec (60679865) and the other (46791956) to everything else.  I do not believe the different strut tops change the caster or camber, as they are symmetrical left to right and the Ti/Blackline do not have the GTA's rear subframe.  It's almost certainly just a stiffer mount.

I'd advocate genuine front strut tops, the aftermarket ones I used last time were well enough made but the insert for the strut shaft - which requires changing if you fit Bilsteins due to a different shaft stop ring cross-section - was not a compatible OD and some work was required.

I also bought genuine standard rears, they are to be found affordably as surplus/NOS overseas if you sniff around.  The uprated genuine rear mounts are made of gold dust.

What colour bands/dabs of paint are on your springs?

Thanks bender, looks like fronts are grey/red/yellow and the rear red yellow...

Stock springs, then - not Ti/sports set.  Rear colours are the giveaway there.

I'd also swap bump stops and covers/gaitors

Thanks warsch, that was my next question.

I'd overlooked this because the Bilstein B6s came with new boots on the rear (and a specific instruction not to add bump stops), and up front I had two sets of gaiters and bump stops to pick/choose the best pair from.  The gaiters scrubbed up fine, bump stops were probably 8-8.5/10 in terms of condition.
