Hey guys,
I went to go see a 164Q today. It has been sitting for 4 years and has not been started. My only real concern is that when I pushed down on the clutch pedal, it 'freed' itself and then with little resistance went to the floor. It retracts back to its normal position but has very little resistance, like only a return spring.
Does anyone know if this is a major problem ie. Clutch job? Or could the system simply need fluid added and bleeding?
Any help is appreciated,
Thanks, Andrew.
It sounds like the master cylinder seals have failed. Do you know if it is operational at all? I guess get someone to watch the slave to see if it is moving at all when you press the clutch pedal. I don't imagine changing the master would be that hard but it looks like a bit of an awkward spot. Still, they aren't that expensive (here's one on eBay (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/New-SACHS-Clutch-Master-Cylinder-6284-600-126-fits-Alfa-Romeo-164-3-0-i-e-QV-/161526817091)) so I say just buy it and worry about the clutch issue once the car is in your driveway! 8)
Ummmmm. Alfa no.4 is on its way. This is the last one! I promise!
Needs to go to the mechanics for a timing belt and sort out the clutch then it arrives home. I'm so excited ;D ;D ;D
It is a 1992 Alfa 164Q, 5 speed manual, sunroof and leather seats.
Needs a major clean and polish, but is straight as anything and the paint is almost perfect (and original)
Here's a pic of my new beauty: (Verrry dirty and has white spots all over it)
Andrew.
Hahaha, that is AWESOME!!!! Congrats, it sounds really promising. Going to be so satisfying the first time you crank it over & it comes back to life. And great to hear a 164 that has been sitting for a long time will be saved too. Many people would have been tempted to part it out rather than get it back on the road, but I think that's a crime if the car is salvageable. Can't wait to hear more updates once you get around to it (& pics!). Good work! 8)
Haha thanks stu,
Yeah the guy was going to sell it or part it out. It is much too nice to be wrecked. I just can't wait to get her home for a clean. Hopefully within the next few days, so a lot of pictures will be posted.
She also has an ansa exhaust fitted and lowered on konis aswell, which are much more reliable than the electronic struts.
All in all a tidy car, I'm so thrilled to finally own one of these beasts that everyone has been raving about ;D
Thanks, Andrew.
Welcome to the Q club!
Looks great Andrew, way too good to wreck, look forward to more detailed photos, where did you find this one?
How are the Supers going Stuart, any more work done?
Cheers David & Joe!
Yes I can't wait to upload some snaps of her when she is amongst my other 164's!
She hopefully will get delivered on Tuesday if all goes to plan.
Yes, Stuart how are your 164's going? Had enough of superglue yet? ;D
Also here's another picture of it:
Andrew.
How's that Alfetta GT, does the fellow want to sell that?
Hey Andrew,
Don't be fooled by the link that stustustu123 posted (no offence Stu) But that master cylinder advertised in the ebay link is for a Left Hand Drive 164, so the mounting hole/bolts are in different locations compared to the Right Hand Drive cars, so save yourself the money!
cheers
Dom
Hey Domenic,
Thanks for the heads up! If I need to get a replacement it would probably be from a local wrecker. I'm mainly focused on getting her running first.
Anyway, she is getting delivered tomorrow evening, I'm so hyped!
Neil, I'm not too sure if he is selling the Alfetta. I will ask him tomorrow.
Thanks, Andrew.

Ahh good pick up! I didn't actually think about that aspect. :-[
I note that Alfissimo sells a rebuild kit for RHD for $48USD. Not sure what the differences are between the seal kits for a LHD and RHD as I imagine they'd be similar internally. Who knows...
Well it arrived this afternoon. After just a wash she came up a treat. On the weekend I will give her a clay bar, polish and wax. ;D ;D ;D
Here are some snaps:

Andrew.
Wow, it really does look very good in those pics! So glad to see it's gone to a loving home with some other 164s to keep it company, haha. Your neighbours must think you are even crazier than me, lol. Exciting times, should be a fun project. 8)
Hi Andrew,
well done on your latest aquasition..!
Let me get this straight. You now have 4 164's and you're not 18 yet?
Wow..! That's brilliant.
I commend you on seeing the virtues is the Q and going out and buying one.
Great looking car with a great engine and, most importantly, has a manual box.
Get it right mechanically and you'll be hooked!
Thanks stu and Italian.
My neighbours do think I am crazy hahaha. We've renamed our street 'Alfa Boulevard' lol.
Yes that is right Italian, I'm 16 currently turning 17 in August. It's always funny seeing people's reaction when I tell them I'm into Alfas! They say I should be looking at Commodores and Falcons instead! Haha.
But honestly 164's are so cheap these days, you can probably end up with about 20 of them for the price of a new Camry. Now is the time if you want to buy one!
Thanks, Andrew.
Beautiful! This was the one at the car wash wasn't it? How does it drive😃?
Hey Stefan,
Yes it sure was the one at the car wash! I installed new NGK BP6ES spark plugs tonight and I am going to flush the coolant system soon. May even try to fire her up this weekend!
Thanks, Andrew.
Hey guys, don't mind me posting a lot of questions regarding the my Q, I'm new to them and they are quite different to a standard '89 164.
I've have just fixed/replaced all my interior lights that were not working. However, on the drivers side I can't seem to find the footwell light. The passenger side light is there and works but can't find the drivers side light. Can anyone take a picture of theirs or tell me where it should be?
Also did the q come standard with an alarm and remote locking? Mine has one but I can't seem to understand how it works. I press the unlock button and when I open the door the indicators flash. They stop after a while but when I turn on the ignition they start flashing again. Help?
Thanks, Andrew.
Hi Andrew,
It's not in the steering column shroud is it? I've got two like that and one not. Sorry, I can't help with the alarm questions. (I think they are the most useless thing under the sun and always take them off my cars).
By the way, congrats on four Alfas. I've just bought #30, so you need to speed up a bit.
Regards
Steve
Adelaide.
Mine is under the steering column, draw a line between clutch and brake pedals and go up. Mine has no alarm, so it's been added.
Thanks for that guys, yeah mine has an opening in the steering column shroud but the unit is missing completely. I'm going to try and take an under door light out from one of the other cars and see if I can make it work.
Also, I tried the sunroof today. The buttons are on the overhead light assembly. I press the buttons and I can hear a relay clicking on but the sunroof doesn't move. Any advice on what could be wrong? I really hope it's not the motor!
Thanks, Andrew.
Possibly the worm drive in the motor which drives the two cables. I had to take out the roof liner then the sun roof assembly to inspect and fix the mechanism by stacking washers to position the worm drive. But it might not be your issue. Actually probably not your problem, if the roof moves but not in alignment then that could be the problem.
Removing the sunroof assembly is a reasonably big job and a PITA.
Good luck.
In my mind, sunroofs are a useless bit of accessory in a car.
Thanks Neil,
Looks like I'm going to have to take the roof lining out soon :'(
When I press the button, nothing at all happens. No noise, nothing. The sunroof in my other car works so at least I have a spare.
I personally love sunroofs, except when they leak >:(
Also I fixed my footwell lights. I used a light assembly from the door lights on my other car. There was a connector pushed all the way behind the carpet and the connectors clicked right in place 8)
Also, I managed to crank the engine today, no fire up but I took a fuel line off and pumped some fuel into a bucket. It's old and smells off so going to flush the system. Maybe tomorrow we will get her to fire up!
Thanks, Andrew.
Ok, so I have flushed out all of the old fuel in the lines, I have put in new spark plugs and there is spark. But she still won't fire. Not even thinking about it.
Any suggestions?
Andrew.
Getting fuel?, are the plugs wet?, clogged fuel filter?, fuel pump working?, try some 'start ya bastard' starting fluid, Colin.

Do you know if the injectors are firing? You may want to check they are getting a signal to fire. If nothing any any then possibly a bad earth, hopefully not the ECU!
