Title: Ryco Z723 vs Z89a in a 3L track car
Post by: dfrye on February 28, 2016, 04:28:48 PM
I've used both these filters in the past in my gtv6 3L 12v, but the 723 (which is the specified filter for the 164) is $51 at repco vs $16 for the 89a which also fits the 105. Anyone know if I really need to spend three times for the 723? It is track use only.

A good question. I've used the Z89a on my 2.5l GTV6 on and off over the years with no issues. Its a smaller filter though than the Alfa part number. Looking at the Ryco catalogue, the Z89A and Z723 have the same seal size, spindle thread and height (within a mm or so). The Z89a is a wider diameter though. Thinking logically provided the filtering specs were equal then the larger filter should have a longer effective life.

I suspect the reason for the price difference is that Ryco get the Z89 made to their specs, whereas they buy the Z723 from another supplier and put their sticker on it.

Cheers

One thing for sure, it wont be a 3x better filter. Price is usually indicative of supply, demand and logistics.

Although I've never had a problem with Ryco filters for street cars, Ryco do not recommend their filters for racing. I've found their approach is more generic fitments than specific.

I would use genuine or a brand like UFI, Mahle, Mann+Hummel etc as these seem to closer match Euro manufacturers specs

Z89A fits a lot of Italian cars and other makes including Rovers with Italian engines, the Z89A's are easily available, even at K Mart, so they make truck loads and they are cheaper.
The Z89A is bigger than a Genuine Alfa Romeo filter for a 33, and i have never had problems with Ryco filters, [yet], Colin.

Z9 is the same as a Z89a but a fair bit taller.  From memory there is not enough space between the body and engine to fit a Z9

I also have a Ryco Z9 on my........parts cleaner or kero bath, the Z9 was on Falcans for about 40 years, they are available everywhere and have a large filtering capacity, Colin.
