Title: GTV dash indicator light
Post by: poohbah on December 04, 2015, 12:46:08 PM
Folks, looking for some basic hints on fixing or replacing dash indicator light on an 81 GTV split dash?

Indicators themselves are working, but over the last few weeks the dash indicator light has worked only intermittently and is now not working at all. I can hear the indicator ticking still, just no light.

So - any ideas of whether it is most likely just a dud globe or does the intermittent lead-up to its failure suggest something like a relay or wiring fault?

And finally, how much of a faff is it to get to the dash light in the speedo binnacle?

Hm, I doubt it's a light given the intermittent nature leading up to failure but easy to test. Removing the speedo binnacle is just 4 screws and pull. On the back is a plug and maybe a speedo drive cable depending on your model.

If you get really stuck, I can have a look at the wiring loom and see where the wires go/connect as I have a full loom removed from a car (remarkably useful for fault finding!)

Cheers for that. I will have a poke around the binnacle over the weekend.

I had to disconnect the stereo speakers over the weekend (I need to resolder a couple of connections) and lo and behold, with the speakers disconnected and the stereo off, the dash indicator light is working again.

So its probably down to the same reason that I can't run the headlights, demister, wipers AND stereo all at the same time. Could it be that the stereo wiring is the cause of all the above?

Possibly, but far more likely is you need to add a relay for the ignition. It is a common improvement (should have been done at the factory) and makes a world of difference to the electrical system. In the original set-up, all current passes through the ignition switch which might have worked in the early 80's but by today it's insufficient. Before I put a relay in, I couldn't run the AC and internal blower fan because my indicators became way too slow. Afterwards, no problems.

A search on the forum should find an install guide.

Cheers, that is something I've been meaning to do.

Haven't had relay installed as yet, but that seems to be the issue.
