Title: 2003 JTS Idle problem?
Post by: DAMO1A on November 24, 2015, 08:59:28 PM
I'm looking at a 2003 156 JTS for my son.  The owner says that it won't hold its idle and stalls when the car stops.  Has anyone experienced this and/or knows what the problem might be?

Take it to an Alfa Romeo Independant and get it checked out, hard to diagnose on the forum, could be a malfunctioning Mass Air Flow Sensor or a dirty Throttle assembly, Colin.

Thanks Colin.  I think that is the safest bet.

The JTS is also known for its camshafts wearing out, due to oil dilution, the lobes on the camshaft wear out, meaning the valves won't open enough, to get in enough petrol and air, this will be noticed in a loss of performance, in extreme cases the valves won't open enough on one cylinder causing a poor and rough idle and stalling.
It would require removal of the cam cover to check the camshafts, its a job for an Alfa Romeo Independant, Colin.
