Title: Engine oil for Alfetta 2.0
Post by: EJ83Alfetta on November 17, 2015, 11:15:41 PM
Hi everyone, my Alfetta is due for an oil change. I was just wondering what oil everyone uses and what they recommend.

Kind Regards EJ

Hello

I have a 1982 Sud with a 1.5 boxer engine which is different to yours. The mechanic I use who works mainly on European cars advised me to use a thick viscosity oil.The previous owner of my car  always used 20W/50 oil so I have continued to use this.I think a lower viscosity oil would increase the risk of engine failure as the oil temp. increases and becomes less effective at lubricating engine parts.

My two cents worth: I use 20W/50 in my GTV, but I can't really offer any comparisons with other oils.

In another Alfetta motor, I use Penrite Racing 15, 15W50 100% PAO ester, the good stuff and changed often.

I bought a '79 GTV in '85 with 88000km on the clock.  Used it for 15 years running on cheap Mobil Super Drop from Kmart (in the analogue years well before digital oils were available....) changed at 5000kms.  It leaked more than it burned.   I did change to BP Corse+ for two years in the top end (high speed/heat/high RPM), but rebuilt the engine at 2300,000kms and she still had machining marks in the liners and no discernible cam lobe wear.

I'd use HPR30 these days, but even my own experience tells me it's not necessary to use a super high quality oil.

2.3 million kilometres?? Wow - sounds like my GTV has another 30 years in it!
