Title: the old oil in water
Post by: ARQ164 Shane on July 01, 2015, 07:41:29 PM
Hello guys,

I noticed a little oil in my water when I had my 164 running. Now that I have pulled the motor out and putting it in my 75 I have pulled doff the water pump and pulled out the main oil gallery plug and found that the very soft aluminium washer has been eaten away.

So I think this is the cause of the oil in the water.

What washer should I replace that with?
Cheers Shane

Hi Shane, I would use an aluminium washer again. A copper washer may not take to modern coolants and could cause future failure. If good quality coolant is used you shouldn't have any issues using an alloy one again.  Make sure the seating surfaces aren't to badly pitted and I'd put a little loctite pipe thread sealant on it as well. Should be fine :)
