Title: Italian trip looming...
Post by: Ads on May 16, 2008, 02:47:16 PM
G'Day guys,

I am heading off to Italy in September for about a month.  I will be spending a bit of time in Como before heading to Siena for a couple of weeks to study, ending up in Lucca for a couple of nights before coming home.  Does anyone know of any Alfa specialists around these regions that I should drop in to visit?  I will hopefully get some time to head out to Arese as well  :)

I am sure the parts won't be cheap, but it should be fun practising my Italian with Alfa-related topics!

You really need to go to the Alfa Museum at Arese. The museum at Turin is very very good, but nothing beats Arese.

Yes, the Arese Museum is a must - it can't be described adequately in words.  If you are there then you must go.

Can only confirm Arese, but remember to book first. It is a strange place, when I was there wasn't anyone around.

As for alfa specialists you have AFRA www.afra.it They don't have any cars there, so not terribly exciting unless you are buying parts. They have some interesting memorabilia and things.

If they still have it the wine is a must have for the bottle alone: http://www.afra.it/vini.htm

And isn't Monza GP in September?

I visited the Alfa museum a year ago (2nd time) and nothing beats it. Entry is free with a complimentary brochure. Go in the morning when its open for 3 hours until lunch - its only open for 2 hours in the afternoon.
On another day, you could visit Monza and stake out the Ferrari factory gates and Fiorano for a couple of hours. Its incredible what you see coming and going.
Eat lots of pizza, sip real coffee and soak it in.
Then try coming home.
Cheers,
Ric.

Thanks for the advice guys- Arese is the trip that it seems I must make time for.  The original plan was to get a day in at Monza for the GP, but they only sell general admin tickets for the Fri-Sat-Sun as one lot- no single days, and that is all I could squeeze in.

I am already wondering how I will be able to come back, but the girlfriend and the 105 will be here after all ;).  Though if I find a step nose over there in a barn...

Have a nice weekend!

Lautista,

I think closer to the event they will sell the individual days. I had a bit of bad timing, living 3 years in Monza but always being busy that exact weekend. Last year there I took the Friday off to watch the practice though. I could buy the tickets at the gate, this was in 2006. Its good value, much cheaper and you are allowed to sit wherever you want. As a last resort, you can see part of the track from the surrounding park. Having a walk around the old autodromo is quite interesting too, definitely a time when men were men...
