Title: Alfetta radiator replacement
Post by: ALF750 on August 29, 2014, 05:22:01 PM
Hi all, just wondering what people have done for replacement radiators?  My alfetta has started leaking and local shop thinks it is not worth repairing due age.  Tia

Hi there I believe alfetta radiators can be recored and you can have the tanks sandblasted and reconditioned. I had mine refurbed and the radiator guy said they are worth savings as the original tanks are solid. I've heard of some people updating the fans with new ones that draw less current to improve overall electrical performance but I haven't done this as yet. Hope that helps

I believe a GTV6 radiator is a good replacement?

Does a GTV radiator fit a sedan?   I also have an unregistered Sportiva II which has a newer type with finer fins and plastic tanks, but was holding off borrowing from it.

Did you hand them your old radiator and they restored it? What did they do/you get for your money exactly?

Aussie Desert Coolers make very nice aluminium radiators.

Expect to spend over $700 though. Yes, good things cost.

Sorry for delay in reply.   $650 was for a new core and resolder of some tank leaks, plus new black paint to cover it all up!   The 79 Alfetta radiator has steel tanks, whereas the 82 Sportiva II I have has plastic tanks.   I did find an Aluminium Giulietta aftermarket rad but it was way dearer and may not have fitted(??).   Also, the Sportiva rad bottom outlet is straight not a 90deg elbow like on the 79 Alfetta, so different hose is needed.
Since all this, I have hit another 'roo and poked another hole in the overhauled radiator and smashed the LH front everything.!!   I've soldered the radiator up myself this time - so far so good.    Body repairs on hold for now though.   Considering a 5-poster bull bar to protect my investment.:)
