Does anybody know if there is an Australian supplier (stockist) for a gear reduction starter motor to suit a 1600 GT Junior. I can order one on from classic alfa however I'm more than happy to support the locals if they're up to it. I'm in. Brisbane
Thanks in advance
Craig
Craig, I bought one for the 1900 a couple of years ago from these guys http://www.castleauto.com.au in Castlemaine in Vic.
Cheers Dave
Thanks, I'll give them a ring tomorrow when I get this old one out. I forgot how much of a bear it is to get to all the little 10 and 12mm bolts that hold the plenum then carbs on... Unless I've gone about this the wrong way :)
Should probably do the rubber carb mounts while i'm in here....
and it's out.... 3 bolt, 8 tooth, Bosch.
Anybody know of a good supplier for carb mounts in Australia .. Or am I better off OS?
G'day: Re gear reduction starter. Castlemaine electric (CAE) certainly have one for the 2 litre. For other capacities you need to make sure they can supply the correct pinion. Also two points to note if you buy one. First, make sure the cable terminal is placed on the side om the unit which faces outward from the engine block. (it can be fitted either side). Second, the solenoid terminal is only located un place by the internal soldering! You need to disassemble and fix somehow--or just run a good bead of semi rigid RTV around the terminal block and casing. (The connection failed for me in the middle of Targa Tas this year- not amused.)

Rookie mistake on the designer's part. Solder is extremely poor and unreliable for mechanical joins. I'd use something s good deal stiffer than RTV.
I ended up getting the original fully reconditioned as it was pointed out me by another mechanic that I have a lovely auto electrician living in the next street. New brushes, solenoid, some springs etc. I mentioned it was for an old Alfa and he sandblasted the cast iron and then clear coated it for me, painting all else black. Very happy

For those of you playing at home this starter, Bosch 0.001.211.016 weighs 6.24kgs.
So there's more weight (than just wallet) to be lost going with a new gear reduction version.
Just realised you pulled the carb plennum to fit - If you pull the dipstick out, and the dizzy cap off, you can feed the starter in from the front... at least, that's how I remember having done mine!

*Now* he tells you..... heh heh heh :D
That looks the Biz Craig !
Removed more than just the plenum!! :-\
I doubt I could have got at the starter bolts. It's remarkable how much less space there is for your fingers and stuff between a 1600 and 2000 block (15mm?)

All shiny now :)
long stack of extensions, run the ratchet in from the front too!
You don't want to have to do the starter on a 164, trust me!
Shiny again :)

And all back together again, quite pleased with how the carbs and airbox painting came out, shiny!
