Title: Save a Gtv Today
Post by: brook308 on February 07, 2014, 08:45:50 PM
Hi All,
Thought i'd post some pics of a 77 gtv I'm getting back on the road.
It's been a while since i've had an alfa road car so the time has come to save this old girl.

I love these cars. I remember when they were new. They were the most beautiful, purest design from Giorgetto Guigiaro with very elegant, clean lines. The later cars didn't look anywhere near as good with all the added plastic bits and pieces. Good on you for saving this very special car. :)

Totally agree, early 911's, Maserati Merak, Dino 308gt4 and early 116 gtv's are my favourites.
Lucky for me you can pick gtv's for bugger all really.

My butt! What's wrong with plastic bits? I love the 1970s GTVs but there is nothing like a 1985 GTV6  :)

brook308, this is so cool that you're sharing this with us. I have a Alfetta Gt at about the same stage as this. Looks like these things rust in all the some areas, You have inspired me to put up some pics of mine.
Keep up the great work

Tend to agree as in my opinion, they just kept refining  the design as they went along.

Nevertheless, I like 'em all and I just bought a couple more to the family in the last months or so. An '83 and an "85.

Alfa gold !  ;D

Don't think I've ever seen it done but I always thought the 116 Gtv could have done with a big brother, same styling but say 150mm wider and a longer wheelbase with a lower roofline.
A bit meaner looking, say like a Detomaso Mangusta type of car with a v8 quad cam!

Look out it's Mad Dog MD.  G'day MD it's been a while.
Have you been out stalking unsuspecting Alfa owns again reliving them of their GTV's?
You know what the doctor said about this.  Well good buddy l'm with you, tell the white coats to get stuffed and collect as many as you can, like you say they are Gold.
Few cars can stimulate a true petrol head like a GTV can.  Personally the two litre model gets me into the grove quicker than just about anything know to mankind, but then l need little encouragement.

Good to see another GTV in good hands brook308, have fun and enjoy you project.

Got it from 17fifty, it was a SA car that has had a fortune spent on it over the years.
It was left sit from 2010 outside hence the rust.
Compared to some though the rust wasn't too bad and the car is very original.
I bought it and then had to wait for a dose of motivation to start on the rust.
Getting closer now, i'll prep the car but will pay a pro to do the colour in a booth.
Found a guy who will do the job for a very good hourly rate plus $200 for booth hire.
I normally paint the cars myself, good enough for a race car but this time i'd like better finish.

Just wanted to raise a point about saving alfettas or any other classic car for that matter and it revolves around brook308's first photo of his alfetta and a bucket of water. Nice and clean now and put to bed in the garage to start the process of decay. How many of them get a wash the day before going out for an early morning cruise. I always was suspect of the sitting water and then the waterless carwash system was developed. I only use water when the car is really dirty and thats not often as it is only dust and bugs that i usually need to clean off. Since using the waterless system i have noticed a reduction in the progress of existing rust and hardly any appearance of new outbreaks.

alfa duk,
I do not have any experience with any waterless car washing system.
Yep, washing ya classic and rolling it back into the garage for next time would be a good recipe to create rust. However, my theory and my practice is when i roll the car out of the garage for an outing if it's only got a bit of light dust i tend to wipe it down with moist chamios. In saying that my paint is not in showroom condition so I probably wouldn't wipe down a mirror finished paint job that way.
My thoughts are if you wash your car, chamios it down and take for a spin to dry it out.

sorry brook308 for the thread hijack

My guess would be that when brook308 is finished he will probably take your advice and wring it out before it goes back in the garage all in the name of rust control you understand.. ;D

May is the target at this stage, I'm starting to run out of brownie points so I have to limit my work to after hours and I'm starting to get a bit too old for that!

It's all relative really, I would love to be fixing up an old dino but the time for that has passed for the moment. Mucking around with an old GTV is just as much fun really.

It's also much easier on the nerves reving the sh!t out of an old nord motor than it is a 308 quad cam, not quite the same sound and performance but $100 vs $10K for a 2nd hand motor makes the trip much more relaxing!

BTW that $2800 GTV from Buderim is on Gumtree. I'd be dead but it's worth a look!

See Ya  :D

Took a good part of a day to get the panel in primer.

Love your work ethic, George. All too easy to let the "just get it on the road and use it" project turn into the "multi year full resto maybe never get it finished" project. Speaking from experience of course.
Well done mate.

Thanks Pete,  recon this one will be on the road in two to three weeks, hoping for an alfa sympathetic rwc person.

I've got another 77 that will be the "multi year project" when the kids have all left home, although I hear they can hang around till they're 30!

Bit more radical though.

77 GTV shell
Rear floor removed
3.2 v6 or Lexus/Yamaha v8 mated to a transaxel mounted in the back (there was a 3.2 alfa gt at willow bank last weekend and the sound that thing made, wow)

Kind of like the giocattolo concept but 116 style rather than sud.

Thanks Brent, sounds like a plan, still got the fun part of getting a RWC, there's a few items that need attention, mostly electrical.

How's the Sprint? Was it just a slipped cambelt or did valves meet pistons?

Title: Re: Save a Gtv Today
Post by: hammer on March 17, 2014, 05:50:50 PM
Simple fix with the Sprint George. It turned out to be a dodgy injector. I took it down to Automotion and Cameron had it fixed within half an hour. All injectors now replaced and I'll carry a couple of spares in the race kit.

i can't get to any AROCA sprint or race rounds now until the next Italian Challenge in May so I reckon I'll head down to Lakeside for the general practice on March 29. Hangin' to get some time behind the wheel. I might even have the Giulietta ready for that practice day!!

Cheers,

Brent

I'd be dead if another alfa turns up here. It's funny, the boys have all of a sudden become interested in the GTV now that its all one colour.

Got a bit done today,

Fitted the,
windows I had to move for rust repairs,
stainless trim,
door cards,
rear seat and carpet,
got the head lights tail lights working &
Fixed the horn switch.

Still to do,
Fix indicator switch, reverse light switch, wipers, install screen washer, replace lower ball joint, replace steering boot, install wing mirrors and replace rear vision mirror, fit rest of interior trim, fit stock carbies and air cleaner, check brakes and general service.

Getting closer to RWC,

Reverse lamps working, was fuse carrier and dirty fuse,
Indicators, was the switch mech,
Put in a windscreen washer,
Put the wipers back on,
Fitted the original hell bore steering wheel

Hi Pete,

Yes RWC was all good, I think the mechanic was more interested in the mechanical layout of the alfetta than any thing else.
Motor, gearbox and clutch are all good, will need some suspension work though as she steers a bit like a boat. Don't think I'll be punting her round lakeside or up a hill fast just yet.
She sounds good though, little bit on the loud side but no worse than my old 308 and I never got pulled over in that car.
So mission accomplished I'm back on the road in an old italian car and it feels great.

You'll have to come to the creek for a visit next time your down this way.

Yes, my position as team manager might be in jeopardy with Warrens car almost catching on fire (some dodgy auto electric work), the role could open up to the market.  :)

Btw the gas axe has come out across the road, all I saw was bits of sunroof and panels all piled up on the ground, what was once an alfetta GTV may soon be a 3l v6 with a seat strapped to it!

The parts for the suspension have only just left sunny England so I don't think I'll have it back together by Friday.

Nice new bushes courtesy of EB Spares,

4 x lower control
2 x poly upper control arm
2 x poly caster control
1 x new lower ball joint, the other had already been replaced for the rwc

The steering rack was good so hopefully she'll steer a bit better now.

Whilst I had the front end apart I took the opportunity to do the following;

Install 24mm torsion bars, up from the 18m toothpicks,
Install 22mm anti rolll bar up from 18mm stock,
Lower the car 50mm,
Set max caster,
Give it a bit more negative camber, as much as I could get given the stock lower control arm bolt length.

Test drive time!

Gave it a quick alignment, 0 toe, caster 4.5 positive, camber -2.5 deg.

Drove fantastic, only issues, wants to tram rail a bit so I think i'll try some toe in and is way too soft in the back now with stock rear springs. The rear tyres hit the guards on bigger bumps so I'll have to fix that!

Went for a hunt around the creek and got lucky with a set of stiffer lowered sedan rear springs, thanks Waz!

We recon they are the same springs as we have in the track cars at 15mm diameter.

The car now sits 20mm higher at the back, it was 602mm to the rear guards with the stock 12.5mm springs.

Test drove the car on a pizza run and yep, very happy now, it's a car that's fun to drive not scary, very happy chappy!!!

Think I'll stop pissing around with it now and just drive for a while. :)

Drove fantastic, only issues, wants to tram rail a bit so I think i'll try some toe in and is way too soft in the back now with stock rear springs. The rear tyres hit the guards on bigger bumps so I'll have to fix that!
What offset are your wheels? too close to 0 offset will cause both of these things to happen...

Offset is +22, handling is good now, front end grip is great!
My toe settings were off when I first set the alignment.

OK,

My son wants to restore this old 77 that I had stashed away to use as his 1st road car. I was keeping it for panels for the race car but it's to good to cut up.
Yes is has rust problems but not that bad really, mainly the usual lower panel places but not upper panels.

The A pillars, C pillars, radiator support, around the windscreen and the tail light panel are all very good.

So here we go again, with the help of my son Winton we're going to save this poor old 77 and get her back on the road again.

Cheers
George
