how can I get a copy if I'm not a member? Pay for it individually?

Sorry mate. For club members only. It's only $70/year to be a member and that gets you 11 magazines per year.

Not to mention access all the other events, activities and special offers available to members. $70 well spent  ;D

Can I join online yet or by direct debit, or do I have to the bank to issue me with my first ever cheque book? :)

No need for a dinosaur cheque book (my mother in law still insists on using these bloody things!). All the details are on the AROCA Qld website on the "Our Club" tab, then the "how to join" section. There are pdf and word versions of the application form and direct deposit banking details. We don't have credit card facilities but the direct deposit seems to suit everyone.
