Title: Scratches under my front bumper
Post by: benthaj on March 25, 2013, 07:59:01 AM
Hi,

I have just scratched underneath my front bumper and it looks terrible. I would like to get it fixed but I'm not sure what my options are. I don't want to pay huge $$ in getting it done, but I have read about using touch up sticks or products like chipex. Has anyone had any experience and can off any advice

thanks

I did the same to my car recently and had the front bumper replaced;  I was amazed at how cheap the part was (well, it was $600 but it does cover 1/2 the front of the car).

Anyway, talking to the panel guy he was saying that these days they treat the front and rear bumper covers as disposable items.  Hence the parts cost is not nearly as much as used to be.

Hey Benthaj, what sort of Alfa Romeo is it?, It all depends on how bad the scratches are and if the front bumper is sandblasted and chipped badly, if it is bad, then have it repainted, there are places that specialise in bumper repairs and painting, but as you say, minimum amount of money to be spent, so this is what i would do, go to a panel beating supply place, get them to mix some paint matched to your bumper or your painted fuel cap, get a minimum amount of acrylic lacquer mixed up, about 500 mls, get some grey undercoat to suit, 2 touchup bottles, [empty], some prepsol degreaser, cleanup the scratches with prepsol to remove the grease and wax and dirt, pour the grey undercoat in the touchup bottle and about 50% thinners, mix it up, by shaking the touchup bottle, [they usually have a marble in it], go round the bumper and paint all the scratches with the undercoat, then while it is drying, [it usually drys in 10 minutes], mix up the top coat, [acrylic lacquer], in the tin, by stirring with screwdriver, pour it in other touchup bottle, then mix about 50% thinners and by this time the undercoat will have dried and you can go around the bumper and paint over all the scratches, this is a technique we all use the night before the November Spectacolo, Colin.
