Title: I've Forgotten More Than I Remember.....
Post by: Beatle on January 30, 2013, 05:14:20 PM
Someone please remind me why the Alfa 90 was given that designation.  I'm sure I knew once......

Alfa 75 was for the 75th anniversary, and 33 was in deference to the....well.....the 33.

The only reference to it I've seen is that it was the car that was supposed to 'take them into the 90s'.  So that worked out well...

Hmm,

While that may be the impression, I've owned both and am not convinced that the 75 was a better car, particularly when it repeated many of the the mistakes of the 90.  The ARC in my 75 was 15 times worse than that in my 90.

I had a 1985 edition of Quadrofoglio magazine that had an article on the development of
the Alfa 90. There was some mention that 90 got its name from the 90 people on the development team. I could be wrong though and I haven't read the article for years so who knows. I lent the magazine to a mate of mine many years ago and haven't seen it since.

There was nearly a full on brawl at the Alfa stand at the 85 motor show as I grabbed the last copy and some chick tried to snatch it from me, we were both kids, it got a bit rough but there was no way I was leaving without it , so after an elbow and a hip and shoulder the Quadrofoglio was mine   ;)

As they say what's a Datsun 200B ? A Datsun 180B with 20 more mistakes

Cockroaches. There'll still be Datsun 200Bs running when all the 156 Selespeeds in the world have gone to the crusher..

Just quickly read the "From Nought to Ninety"article in that Quadrifoglio mag.  No definitive answer on why it was called the "90".  Originally called the K2 project.

In the editorial, they spend paragraphs telling how they got all 89 people "who had contributed to its making" into the one spot at the same time.  There were 90 "people" in the photograph though... the magazine noted the 90th person was the Alfa 90 everyone was standing behind of!

... and then there was the Leyland P76, or P38 as many people called it as it was only half the car you expected.

I must admit that I didn't think that the Alfa 90 stood for much at all.
