I am looking at the possibility of buying a 2007 model 3.2l 159 auto matic with about 50,000 kms "on the clock". Are any specific problems I should be looking for?

I am not sure I can specially suggest anything re the 159, barring making sure you have it checked perhaps by an Alfa specialist and/or at the very least check the service records to make sure that it has been properly maintained and serviced on time with the appropriate milestones.  50Km is not a lot of distance on the clock, so perhaps the main key issue is that the timing belts etc have been done as required.

I test drove a diesel 2.2 ? 159 and it impressed for its solidity, quality of feel and immense torque, though being a manual car driver the auto wasn't my sort of thing.  The V6 is nice though as I understand it, a little thirsty.

You won't have to worry about timing belt replacements on 159 Petrol engines, V-6's and 4's, as they are chain driven, the diesel, i beleive has a belt, that requires replacement, i hear on the grapevine that the V-6 timing chain can stretch and cause an engine alarm when the timing goes out, make sure it has a good service history with no skipped oil changes, and get it checked by an Alfa specialist that knows these cars, Colin.

There doesn't appear to be any specific issues with the 159 3.2 that I'm aware of.

There was a factory recall/upgrade, where the brake booster is upgraded by the addition of an electric vacuum booster. So you may wish to ensure this has been done.

My wife drives the slightly upgraded 2008/Series2 159 3.2 QTronic, and it's been great.

Thanks for all your help guys - I was worried by the general concern over Alfa's reliability, but you have reassured me that I needed take any more precautions buying a secondhand one than I would with any other car.

Once again thank you!

Oldmanofoz,
I have a 2007 3.2JTS Q4 but in manual and it has not had any problems what so ever,
Pity you are after an auto, as mine is for sale.
I don't particularly want to get rid of it, but simply have too many cars.
Good luck in your search, they are truly a lovely car with absolutely every feature you could dram of, a stunning design, and great performance.

Mine has clocked 55,000 without issues.  Oh wait, I did have a rear brake light globe go.
