What's the fastest you've ever been in a (land-based) vehicle?

Post your tales of your fastest adventures.  Honesty system applies please.

The fastest I've ever done is 240km/h on a motorbike.

Back when I was a stupid early 20s lad in New Zealand, and it was on a very quiet country road.  We knew the road well, it was one of our regulars.  My friend was on a Yamaha FZR600, I was on a Yamaha FZR400 which had an FZR600 engine installed in it.  My friend had lowered his gearing slightly to suit track work, so he got the jump on me into the straight, but as we reached about 220 I was slowly gaining on him.  He saw me in the mirrors and tried to tuck down a bit, but I went past him at about the speed you walk past someone who is walking slightly slower than you.  As I crawled past him, we looked over at each other, and we both realised how fast we were going as we saw the scenery flashing by behind each other.

I think the fastest I've ever done on the road in a car would be 200km/h.  That was in my Dad's Porsche 928S, but even that was pretty scary, as it was on a bumpy and narrow country road.

I look forward to doing 300km/h one day, anyone here done that?

Not that there's anything right about speeding on public roads.  But sometimes, you know, if the road is appropriate...

1991 Sports Sedan Race at Bathurst,I was clocked at 246 kph down Conrod straight in a 105.LEGALLY.
I think the same race,Domenic Beninca ,Alfetta GTV ,4cyl ,tripple turbo, touched 300 kph before his piston ended up in Sydney and his flywheel in Albury.
Just before it hand grenaded,Domonic overtook me on Mountain straight at the hump with all 4 wheels off the ground.
Wow,,did that thing Gooooo.
And as for his crazy brother Joe,who never says much.He just hides turbos everywhere.Im sure he had rocket fuel in the roll cage.
2 truelly amazing people I miss on the race track.
They certainly stirred up the big 6 litre Chev boys in Sports Sedans and other categories with their 4 cyl= V8 starter motors.
Memories
Then at Eastern Creek,Domenic leading the Australian series Sports Sedan races by a few corners when it stopped.
Never did find the bottom end.Didnt bother Joe,as another engine was installed
Wonders whatever happened to Domenic.

What about your claimed 250kph?

And as for me, managed to get the 75 up to 200kph when I was on my way home from NSW.
Was good fun until a corner snuck up on me haha :P

When I used to write for car magazines I was fortunate enough to be handed the keys to some pretty interesting machinery and told to do indecent things to them. So I did. Despite the predominance of Japanese cars on test I always felt Euro cars were more suited to the high-speed runs. My PB was approximately in a modified 3.0 GTV6 which indicated 220 km/h on the speedo but calculated out to be closer to a true 240 km/h. I also saw 230 km/h in a tweaked Porsche 993 twin-turbo on a track, an indicated 220 km/h in the press 156 GTA at its media release, and about the same in my own Merc 2.5-16V. Most notable achievement was doing just over 200 km/h in that same car .... with my parents asleep in the backseat. See, Mercs are boring.

Was very fortunate to sit beside Richard Anderson in his Classic Adelaide prepared Montreal on a track just south of Brisbane while he coaxed the needle on the speedo all the way around to the second from left digit on the odometer. Really can't say how fast it was but my seat was shaped like a witches hat ;D

Chasing a xr6 turbo down con rod I hit just over 250km/h in fifth gear in my 156gta, in 2003, ran out of straight before I could select sixth gear, not sure what top speed would have been with a longer straight.

Couldnt help myself here.

1980 gtv had an indicated 7000 rpm. With the tyre size and gear ratios I had that calculated to 225kph.
Of course the guages may have been miles out for all i know.

24V 164 Super indicated 240kph.
Again the guages may have been out but the high speed performance of that car was amazing for a 3.0lt 4 speed auto.

My alfetta sedan hit a wall at 6000rpm (pace engine). Always thought it struggled trying to move all that air out of the way compaired to the GTV.

Paul your car must be pulling at leat 6000rpm heading into the breaking points for turn one at PI?

Off topic but how do you think your 156 would fair against your alfetta at the island?
