hi all,

I'm considering the purchase of a 2000 model Spider, Twin Spark. It has 97,000 kms on it

I just had it inspected by a mechanic today, who's given me his report

He lists a number of issues, but only some that seem serious or worth mentioning, which are:

- "noise at front of engine - abnormal bearing noise - belt tensioner pulley bearing, balance shaft tensioner bearing or similar. Further investigation needed."

- "crunch on 2nd to 1st downchange at speeds over 20 km/h" - though this is listed as 'minor'

- "oil stained transaxle - needs clean & reassess - engine oil?"

- "if clutch ped pushed hard, pedal sticks to floor momentarily or longer"

I suspect the only one of the above issues that may be a serious concern is the "bearing noise"

I just would like to know what the Alfa gurus here think

I'll use the above, and other issues found, to negotiate the price down, methinks.

But if I'm at risk of large expense and/or hassles with this car, then I think I'd rather tell the seller I'm not buying.

thanks in advance for any advice

cheers

Good to hear that you have got the car checked out to sort out any issues.  I suggest you also check out other similar threads hereand get an idea of what to look out for with twin spark GTV & 156's.

Sounds like a few things are required there  but if the engine has a 'rattle' that is an indication of oil starvation and damage to the variator; or again maybe something else depending on the noise ...

Get the car checked out by a Alfa dealer or Alfa specialist  - refer to our sponsors page or the one in your state.  The cost of a full pre-purchase inspection will save you money in the long run as any issue is a good barganing tool on price.  They will know what to look out for and give a price for repairs - good to negotiate & your budget.

Remember you do not have to buy car you check out and they are a few around.

Good luck.

hi John

thanks for your reply

basically, I reached the conclusion that there's a good chance the cambelt needs urgent replacement. Also the tyres on it  are unroadworthy.

the car's in Adelaide and I'm in Melbourne so haven't actually seen it in the metal

if I do go through with it, I'll get it trucked to Melbourne

I told the seller I'd give him 11 grand if the inspection didn't identify anything significant. So now I've said I'll only buy it if he comes down to 9 grand. A bit cheeky maybe, but given the hassles and expense likely, I'm not really interested unless it's a total bargain.

the car seems slightly dog-eared from the inspection report - minor scratches on it, etc, but overall seems reasonable apart from the above.

Out of interest I have had a look at cars for sale in other states to check out what is on the market.  Cars are generally cheaper and more realistically priced in NSW for some unknown reason.  But it's the final agreed sale price that counts.

An Alfa Specialist cautioned me on interstate cars as they have to be really good to be worth the effort.  I recently saw a 156 V6 1999 model that had done about 49k for $12,200 and I regret not buying it. It was sold privately by an employee of an Alfa franchise and it was fully serviced and ready to go. (you still should get a pre purchase inspection !)

Its better to look at a local car, confirm price and roadworthy issues, then get it checked out by a local Alfa Specilist as you also  save money with transport etc ...

I actually joined the club to get contacts and benefits prior to buying my car.  Number one concern is service history and condition and sure, we do not all have opportunities to garage a car.  A car not maintained costs You more in the long run.

Plenty of cars on trading post car sales carpoint carsguide and it is best to get the car with best condition, sercice records, lowest kms in your price range.

Good luck with your search.
