Lake Hume Alfa Romeo drive - 16 January 2011.
« on: December 28, 2010, 08:20:14 AM »

Lake Hume drive,  Sunday  16 January 2011. All Welcome……

The Alpine chapter would like to invite you on a local drive out to and around the Hume Weir. At full capacity it should look magnificent, it’s been many years since it’s been any where near full. We will also look at the site of the old Hume Weir race circuit.

 *Duration – about 2.5 hours.

*Starting time- 10am  at John Shearer (Bonkfrog) home,  number  2  Nordsvan Dr. Wodonga.

*Contacts – John Shearer on  0402 296 615. Paul Edwards 0409 237 132 also via the club forum.

 * BBQ lunch after our drive back at Johns home.

If driving up from Melbourne,  l can meet  you at Wangaratta at 9am and we can travel in convoy to Johns home. Travel time from Melbourne to Wangaratta is about 1.75 hours (in an Alfa Romeo that is :D :D) up the Hume Hwy.

 *ALL WELCOME   Cheers Paul

We're going to miss this run unfortunately (the only weekend already booked in the 2011 calendar, other than the six hour!). When you're done can you share the route notes? I'd like to plan a weekend tour up that way.

Paul,
I am trying to reschedule to make it to the Jan 16 Run. Same day as RACV Rally to Mornington.

If I can make it I will dig out photos from Hume Weir and bring them along. Scrub Corner had trees a bit closer to the inside edge of the track when I photographed from that spot. Cars were so close I had to use a fish-eye lens to get them all in. The layout of the circuit on that link was not quite right either. The grandstand shown on the outside of Globe Corner was actually further round and gave spectators a good viiew of cars coming up the back straight, entering and then rounding Globe Corner, into the left hander and then the right hander before the finish line.

Paul, I will probably see you at Wang, I would like to take the GTV6 on a bit of a drive. I have to drop my daughter at Tulla for a 6am flight so i might keep on going up the Hume. Maybe i could meet you for breakfast somewhere about 7.45?

Some driving notes: Lake Hume is full, so the drive should be scenic; we're in sight of the lake most of the way. We'll stop at the weir wall for 10 minutes or so, then on to Kangaroo Point for a group photo - access to the old Hume Weir circuit is difficult and there's not much left. Then, a run around the lake to Tallangatta - here we'll take a toilet stop and a look around. A few km further is a lookout for Old Tallangatta, although there's very little above water at the moment. Across the bridge, again skirting the water's edge. The road here is narrow, with some blind corners - little traffic though. About 7km of dirt road (some rough corrugations)  before Bethanga. Into Bellbridge and across the 1930 iron bridge, then to Wodonga again. We will be having a BBQ with an Italian emphasis at 2 Nordsvan Drive from about 1PM.
Look forward to seeing other alfisti there - please let me or Paul know if you're coming.
