Hi All,

We are having some problems with our 147 2.0l ts (selespeed), everytime we turn on the aircon the car stalls. It makes a clunking noise and jerks then just turns off. Bit of a problem with this rainy weather and cant use the air con.

any ideas?????

thanks for that we thought the same thing, but how can we check for sure and so you know where we can get a new one from. My husband is great at fixing the car but he is away for work, I am trying to source the parts so he can fix when he gets back.

Cheers

You need to get this looked at ASAP, it sounds like the Aircon has developed a leak and the R134 gas and oil have leaked out and the compressor has locked up, DON'T drive it as your Serpentine belt will seize up as well, then you will have no Alternator or water pump, then your car will overheat etc, get the picture, the compressor is at the front of the motor as is not too hard to get at, unlike the Alternator, a new compressor is about $900 new off ebay, a secondhand one is about $200, i would go with a good secondhand one, get the airconditioner vacumned down at least, it all depends on how much metal has gone round in the system, OR it could be simply a seized compressor clutch bearing, it would be good if it was that, Colin.

Furthermore, the aircon system is under great pressure, and if you go pulling pipes off under pressure, you could cause an injury and blindness and a $50,000 fine from the EPA for working on aircons without a licence, take it to an Alfa specialist that has an aircon licence, so they can repair it and gas it up, Colin.

get a second hand one try the club sponsors first they will have one, i changed mine myself, i parked it in the back yard and very carefully let the gas out and swapped it over, be carefull with the belt as you could break the tensioner (i did that) and i have a friend in the aircon bus so i got him to recharge it for me

No i am a Melbourne boy, contact Alfa repairers in your state and make sure they have an aircon licence, so they can fix it on the premises, and not send it 'down the road' to some backyarder, Colin

And when its fixed, let us know how you get on, as we might go down that path ourselves one day, Colin.

On reflection, it most likely isn't the compressor clutch bearing, as the motor stalls when the compressor switches on, it would be the compressor, you can run your ventilation demist system without the compressor, on the 156 there is a button that looks like a piece of ice, it would be similar on a 147, just switch the ice button off, it would be in the owners manual, the 258 pages that explain the workings of the climate control, Colin.
