Alister,

maybe we can use the combined circuit again.  Next year the AASA is running a production car based enduro series of 4 rounds of 6 hour races.  The first round is to be at Calder using the old National circuit layout!!!!!

Calder, the most aptly named but misspelt race circuit anywhere.
Pete Geoghegan always described Calder as "2 squirts and a wiggle". I have many good memories of some great racing at Calder watching (and photographing) Big Pete G in a Mustang dicing with Moffat, Jane, Beechey, Thompson and the other V8's while trying to hold off a couple of Lotus Cortinas, a few Minis and the rest if it was wet as it often was. They were the days when the crowds were 12-15 deep wall to wall all the way round the circuit and the traffic jam was back as far as Keilor.

Even when it rained and or snowed Calder still offered the best motor racing entertainment of any circuit in Victoria. Circuit racing, touring cars, sports cars, open wheelers, rallycross, drags; Calder had it all and it was close to Melbourne

There were a couple of dragsters that had huge crashes at Calder. Graham Withers was one who was still under full power when he reached the end of the strip, couldn't stop and cartwheeled A over T through the stone fence and ended up in the paddock well beyond the southern perimeter of the circuit. He emerged OK. He was just doing a demo run during a circuit race meeting. That sure got everyone's attention. Not sure if it caused many circuit racers to switch to the drags though.

Shortly after that they invented the parachute.

Barry, you would be old enough to remember but didn't the Austin Healy Sprite club run a regularity event at Calder about 30 - 35 years ago as a fore runner to the 6 hour at Winton.??  I can vaguely remember watching a Le Mans style start with a event that went all day or afternoon with lots of different cars. ( Jes i must be getting old).

Paul,

Oldest car eligible is 1999 ( or 2000 can't quite remember) so Alfettas are not an option.  It would have to be something a bit more modern....shame Hugh hasn't still got the 147 GTA
