Hi everyone,

I've got a 02' 147 selespeed, since 1 month ago the gear change to Neutral automatically whenever the car stay still, selespeed system failure also always shown on the dashboard and never goes off, I've took my car to a garage specialist on alfa cars, they've investigated into my car and said it should be some problem related to the pump but they've told me that they are not totally sure about that as they don't do mechanical things but just minor repair and fixing on the cars, they've told me to find another specialist or go back to Alfa to have a further check and see what's the problem and what to replace, but I afraid I'll get ripped off by other garages by telling me to replace the whole selespeed stuff, so I would like to ask if there's any people in this forum had gone through a similar situation as me with their selespeed and what have you finally replaced to solve the problem?

Thanks alot!!!

Selespeed system puts the gearbox into neutral as a safety precaution every time it detects low pressure in the actuator unit.
As in your case the system is doing it all of the time with the warning signal active. This simply means one of two things - either your selespeed pump is failing and it needs replacement, or the accumulator unit on top of actuator (it accumulates the pressure so that the pump doesn't have to work all the time) has failed - usually means its leaking, and don't listen to the dealerships if they say that they need to replace the whole actuator unit it if the accumulator is faulty - they can just replace the accumulator itself - there's a fiat part number for it.
Have it checked out in the Alfa dealership and see what they say first.

Thank you very much!!!! I think I'll book in my car on next week and see what they say about my car and I'll come back again and ask about the parts later!

hi there a lot of the parts you will need are easy to find and are semi cheap and you can do most of the repairs at home the pumps cost about 2-300 buck and its a 10 min job to replace then im not 100% about the accumulator but i think it can be done at home but i will check with a mate as he sells the parts and he can let me know

Take it to an Alfa Specialist Workshop in your state or an authorised Dealer.  There are plenty around and they will give you the right advice and recommendations.

I've brought in my car to the Alfa and they said that the actuator is leaking and they tell me to replace the whole actuator set for 5k!!
I would like to know if it's the only way to get it fixed or there's other cheaper parts I could replace to fix it?

Missed something there; the Alfa Worshops (non dealer) are generally cheaper and have alternatives (i.e. new, aftermarket, secondhand, reconditioned parts) where as the authorised Alfa Dealer Network will have authentic factory parts and pricing will be at a higher level. Some give discounts for club members.

I do not know what state you live in but check out other threads on this forum.

did they say where it is leaking, do you seem to put a lot of fluid in it, some times the hoses come partly off or a cracked and leak for the whole system to fail like that is unlikely, my advice to you is to ring rocco on 0418 410387 and explain to him what is happening and he will be able to help you he is italian so he is hard to understand so it might be easier to talk to his partner ask for the work number. thay sell used good quality alfa parts and there prices are good, I use them all the time
hope this helps

Dehne, the dealer didn't tell me where is leaking but just simply said "Your actuator is leaking and we suggest you to replace the whole actuator", I assume it's the accumulator that cause the problem as it sometimes shows "engine oil pressure low" on dashboard and the pump is working okay. But the other problem comes to me is I found a few garages here in Brisbane but they seems doesn't want to take this job to just change to accumulator for me.....so anybody got some recommendation on garage that is willing to do this kind of fixing in Brisbane?

Suggest you talk to AROCA Qld members for local advice about 147 problems. Richard Anderson at Avanti might be worth talking to as well.

Thanks for your advice!!

I could also recommend Cameron at Automotion and Colin at John French Motors.

Do your research before you jump into anything, could make a big difference to your outlay.

Good luck.
