today my dad and i started restoring my 79 gtv, the car is in resonable condition but a fair bit of rust,
with very poor previous repairs such as bogged over rust holes and aluminium foil to hold the bog in place ::)
the car is mechanicly poor with a hidious noise on take off (from the underneath), a hole in the exhaust, a extremely bad engine but the gearbox is good,
so our plan is to finish the rust repairs and then get the enigne out, paint the enigne bay, put my spair (strong) engine in, paint the car and put it back togehter. the plan for this car is to be a nice clean car that is used mainly for track days. (and maybe a turbo ;D )
here is our progress so far...

Hi Brad,
Good work, how is it under the bonnet in the corners of the inner gaurd toward the windscreen?.Be sure and check the inside of the car around the rear parcel shelf area where the water is supposed to drain(side glass area). My 79 was great on the outside but rotten on the inside in that area,if you look carefully at how that shelf is held in you will know not to anchor your selt belt there even though the child restraints etc are on there!.
Cheers

hi andrew,
i have checked over the car and there is still a bit in in the bottom corner of the windscreen.
the inner gaurds are ok the only other rust is a bit in the shock tower in the enigne bay and some that was under the rear view miror, but esaily fixed.
i havnt checked in side the car but will take the interior out shortly so i will check soon,
where do you suggest attaching my harness to??
cheersw, brad

Hi Brad,
If your not fitting a cage(or1/2) then I suggest you get an ADR approved 4 point harness and use the rear floor seatbelt mounts, crossed over would probably be best.If you want to use a 5 point you will have to plate the floor etc under the seat for the crutch strap.
PS I used the parcel shelf until I took it out then I knew how bad a thing it was.
Cheers

hi andrew,
i am still considering putting a cage in or not,
assuming you have a cage in your race car, where did you get it done?
cheers, brad

Fast Eddie

just a comment on fitting harnesses to a Alfetta GTV without a rollcage.

If you refer to the CAMS manual they strongly advise against using the lower rear (lap) seatbelt points under the rear seat as it effects the working of the harness shoulder straps in a crash.  The closer to horizontal the better so use the child restraint single point behind the rear seat headrest.  the 2 x shoulder harness clips will fit no problem to a single eye-bolt. You may need to drill it out slightly but that will not impact its effectiveness as it is a structural section of the car.

The hip belts can clip onto eye bolts that you do fit into the existing seatbelt holes.  That way you can also retain the lap sash belt which you need to do if you wish the car to remain road legal.

Hi Eddie,
I dont think you are familliar with how that shelf is held in place. There are a few spot welds,4 maybee 6 but from memory4, each side if there has not been any rusting going on.It is spot welded well to the sheet metal across the gap but I am sure it would pull forward very easily in an impact, that is why I suggest to use the floor mounts,Scrutineers in Vic warned me about it and I didnt believe them until I removed it, if you do not have a cage to anchor them to in the horizontal plane which as you say is best.As far as the CAMS Manual goes it recommends max angles and acceptable angles of up to 60 degrees for the belts, the longer the belt the more chance of stretch in an impact is the point.
Brad,
My cage was made by Walker chassis who charge reasonable prices and have the benefit of instant recognition from CAMS in SA when you present the paperwork provided by them.
If you want to use the shelf then you could weld it up properly on the sides and add some braces down to the boot floor where the rear chassis rail is,then you can drill and tap the holes in the child restraint mounts to 5/16 UNF which is seatbelt bolt thread.
I will add some pictures tomorrow of the shelf after removal.
Cheers
Andrew

Hi Brad , I hope you will turn your project into a Group S car. Think of all the opportunities to race a car with a Historic Log Book
See you on the Track!!
