33 Air Filter Hoses....What do they do?

Hi, I'm loving the process of doing up my new toy, but I have something that is nagging at me.

On top the air filter there are 2 outlets (or inlets) that don't have hoses on them. I have seen pictures of other cars with the hoses on. Can anyone tell me what they are and what they do. Should the hoses be on or off?

Thanks!

Greetings fellow Sud/33 owner!  The inlets on the top air cleaner cover of twin carby suds/33's take exhaust gases from valves on the exhaust manifolds back into the air cleaner/induction system. Basically an exhaust gas recirculation system; an Australian ADR emission add on. I think a lot of cars dont have them because a:  Would you like to breathe your own exhaust gas? I don't think so!; and b: Factory front exhaust replacements are almost impossible to find, those that have the popper valve inserts. Even if you can get them they are ridiculously expensive.  The aftermarket versions you get at your local exhaust centre (eg:Proex) dont have these probe brackets on the pipes at all. Hope this helps. Cheers, Phil.

Oh, PS: Not a good idea to leave the inlet pipes open/unblocked. They inlet downstream of the air filter! Phil

105 HP ATW in a 81 Sud is awesome power. Do you have a 1.7 engine?? Standard 1.5 twin carbs produced 83 HP ATW from the factory. My 1.7 in an 83 Twin Carb Sud produces 99 HP ATW (Beninca dyno & Beninca engine rebuild).

Happy Boxer motoring.

Thanks Phil; you have the true Euro twin carb spec. Heads and cams differ to the Aust versions from memory.

Glad to help. 'The Alfasud' by David Owen - A Collectors Guide- ISBN 0-947981-00-4, is a great source of info for anyone interested.

Cheers,

Phil.
