Paint removal, Bead or Dip?

Hi All,

I am in the process of stripping down my 1974 105 GTV2000 to bare shell ready for paint removal by a yet undecided provider.
Has anyone here had experience with chemical dipping? This is my initial preference due to no place being left untreated. I have read some very old posts here but was after some more up to date info.
I have spoken to K&R paint removal in Dandenong ( I am Bayside Melbourne ) and it sounds like a good option as it involves the following dipping process for around $3k:

1. Paint removal
2. Inactivation solution
3. Rust removal/conversion
4. Rust prevention

Any aluminium needs to be removed prior as it will not exist when the car comes out of the bath! What are the door glass pulleys/wheels made of? Seems like aluminium or Nylon? Can they be removed and refitted? Doors could be bead blasted instead if this is an issue.

Any recommendations on providers of dipping/blasting would also be very helpful.

Hi Bruce4,

Bead blasting and similar mechanical paint removal can alter the chassis metallurgy. 
The four part process proposed by K&R looks ideal.  The "Rust prevention" stage is critical if you don't want to repeat the process again in the future!

Do you happen to know anything re the type of material used for the door window cable wheels/Pulleys?

I'm not sure what the pulley gears are made from in your car, but you could just remove them? to check if aluminium or nylon you could easily check with a multimeter if its not obvious

Nice idea!

Multimeter indicates non conductive so I think they are nylon. They are pressed in with what looks to be a large pin with no obvious way to remove them without some special tool.

Is step #4 Paint.. or just a liberal coating of Lanolin?



as mentioned in your other thread, there is Aluminium in the front chassis rail
why not remove the window regulators (105 door bottoms are always rusty)

#4 is an antirust/etch application... cant remember the name of the product - something similar to POR-15
#5 would be paint

Any tips on how to remove the window regulators cable guides/wheels ( I have the actual winder removed )?
I will check the chassis rail but everything I test under there is magnetic.

There are aluminium castings in the fender skirts where the steering box and idler arm bolt on .
You will also have to remove the boot hinge springs and torsion bars . I forgot  :(
