Hey guys
Just wondering how often the egr valve should be cleaned out on the diesel motors. And also, if an unstable idle is due to the increased build up of carbon in the egr valve.
Thanks

Cheaper to buy one maybe

Check its not the DPF. These clog up, especially if you don't do regular highway miles (needed to trigger the regen cycle that will clean it out).  If bad enough this can lead to the engine stalling.
The last time it was sufficiently bad that the dealer recommended replacement of multiple sensors as well as a "forced regen" on the hoist.  Afterwards, when the problem remained but the bill had been paid, they confessed to not having finished the forced regen.  Once done all was OK.
Moral of the story: don't let the DPF clog up but, if you do, insist the service outlet does a full and thorough forced regen before changing any sensors.
