164 fuel flap removal

I stupidly hit my flap whilst filling up. Of course it broke. I have a replacement but need to remove the inside bit of the broken one. Does anyone know how? Do I need to get to it from the wheel arch? Thanks in advance. PS my mechanical knowledge is close to zero :-)

Hi Joe
If it similar in design to my 156 JTS you will find that the flap hinge is secured to the body  by 2 x allen head bolts.

Bonno, I wish it was that easy, I think the 156 is a easier removal design as long as the allen heads do not get rounded
Joe you first remove the little spring that keeps the door open when you release it, you push it out of the slots it goes into at the top and bottom, secondly to remove the door you have to push up and down on the little protruding parts attached to the spring retainers as in the attached photos, sounds simple, but you generally never get away with it, especially the first few times you do it, you may be lucky but they nearly always break, not so bad if you have a replacement but if not and you want to remove it to respsray it or for some bodywork, I would advise not to.
